Finally took the plunge and booked a lesson last week, after enduring countless weeks of bloody shanking. So how did I get on?

After shanking 30 balls into oblivion during the warm up, Mr Pro arrives, taking one shot to diagnose the problem - a VERY strong grip and my ball positioning too far back.

So with a change of grip, I was asked to hit more shots. Result? Shank. I was reassuringly told that this was to be expected due to the new grip leaving the face open. I had to learn to properly release the club.

Several half swings later I was hitting the ball better, but hooking a touch. With a bit more practise I was hitting them much better. My lesson was over and the pro gave me another 100 balls on request and said to come and see him if I had any questions etc.

Need one more lesson in order to transfer to full swings, as it took the most part of the lesson to start to acclimatise to the new grip. I've known about the dodgy grip for ages but never changed it, causing me to get worse and worse.

Hopefully the shanks will become a distant memory ASAP and my iron shots will improve six - fold.

Thanks Lee (Mr Pro) at Broome Manor...

On tuesday...

I haven't been able to get out onto the course in this fine weather because my house is fubar at present. I'm totally stressed out.

On tuesday night I went to B&Q (i wish i had shares because those feckers have had SO much of my wages over the years ...) and stocked up on plastic sheeting, gaffer tape, gloves, decent masks, rubble bags and a hippo bag. I also bought a new sledge hammer.

I found this which reassured me a little about the material I was dealing with: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1525...-notebook.html

The weather broke in the early hours of wednesday morning - I had been expecting to at least be able to work on my roof in the sunshine. But no, it was a ****ing monsoon all bastard day and within 20 minutes up on the roof I was soaked to the skin. I was up there from about 9am through to 3 in the afternoon. There was a thin panel of asbestos cement all the way round the eavees, just above the soffit boards. The idea was that it would stop a fire from spreading to the roof if flames burst out of an upstairs window. I had to bust open most of the old soffit to get at it, then bag it in rubble bags, gaffer those closed and then carry them gently down the scaffolding and place them in the hippo bag.

I take my hat off to any roofers out there. It must be one of the hardest jobs in construction! I was TOTALLY donald ducked. Soaked through and overheating with the work.

And when that was done I had to tackle the cistern.

I had to change clothes in the garage before I could go into the house. What I was wearing was fairly contaminated. All day I'd been thinking about poor old Steve McQueen.

Anyway, it took me another 4 hours to get that demolished and out of the building. It was hard as nails and the sledge hammer just bounced off it at first. I really had to welly it to get it going, then it started to break apart in big chunks. I had to break a bit up inside the polythene, then let that settle for a couple of mins, then reach in and take bits out to fill a rubble bag, and then carry that down from the attic, through the house and out. The ****er filled about 20 bags, I'm serious.

I finished up around 7 o'clock, took a shower and went to bed. I'm still shattered and it's 3 days later!

Did I mention that while breaking up the cistern I managed to stumble and stick my foot between the joists and damage my landing ceiling :mad:

Arrrgghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the punchline. The asbestos removal company sent out a couple of total nobs to collect my load. After all the trouble i'd taken to handle and move the stuff with the utmost care, they left a trail of debris and dust all the way down the drive and onto the pavement! When I saw that, and while I was cleaning up after them, I thanked my lucky stars that I wasn't paying these jokers 3 grand or -god forbid - letting them into my house!!

More house and DIY-related trauma for me this week. It must be my age. Our house is the same age as me and therefore needs re-roofed. So that's what's been going on. But on Tuesday the guys encountered some asbestos while they were stripping the old roof down. I phoned around and got a specialist firm to come out and look at it.

At the same time, I asked them to look at an old cistern in my attic - a beast of a thing about a metre wide and deep and a metre and a half long.

The specialist (whose firm estimated the best prices over the phone) said ... yup that's all asbestos. It'll be 800 quid for the tank and about 2 grand for the firebreak around your eaves.

FFS  That's nearly three grand we ain't got. The new roof is cleaning us out already!

Can I DIY this? I ask.

Yes, he says. But you need to take precautions. Suit up. Wear a mask. Wrap everything meticulously in polythene before you break it. (The cistern is WAY too big to come through the lost hatch so I'm gonna have to break the bastard to get it down. And it weighs a ton. More probably.)

We agree that I'll break and remove everything and have it bagged up for his firm. We agree a removal and disposal service: 300 quid to be picked up from my front drive. I send the roofers home and book Wednesday off work.

Over the past week I've upgraded the site to the latest version of Vbulletin. This has been the biggest ever upgrade and 3.7 has a lot of new features, many of which are designed to enhance the social networking experience.

For example, I particularly like the improvements to the user profile section. You can add your own photo gallery and set up "friends" - this makes it easier and quicker to send PM's etc to these people.

I also like the option for thumbnailing and lightboxing images. Look at this thread from aces_up1504: http://www.rockgolfer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10303

If you click on a thumbnailed image, see how it is presented in the lightbox? sweeeet:cool:
I see this feature as a real enhancement to the Trades section.

Anyway, hope you enjoy! :)

I sincerely hope this doesn't set the tone for the summer. :eekw:

Madness. Sheer bloody madness.

Allardyce sacked by mutual consent.

So were now about to appoint our 7th manager since Keegans departure 11 years ago.

Words are failing me a little bit so I might ramble on here and there, but let me try to put some thoughts into words... but dont expect any structure to this blog entry.

On the back of the Stoke game my preference was to see him stay....write off this season but give him some money in January and let him go on building HIS side...playing in HIS style.

I dont for one minute believe were going to go down either this season or next. We havent won 'owt of note for 39 years...so whats another couple of years of waiting? Sure the football might be mediocre in terms of entertainment value but towards the end of his third full season in charge youd expect to see some signs of progress in a positive direction.

I suppose at least now all links with the past regime are gone...its all now Ashley and Morts baby....lets hope they are good parents.

Timing wise I suppose if your gonna let a manager have several mill to spend during the transfer window then perhaps its best that it goes to a man that may play a more adventurous style of football....who that man might be I dont know...but I suppose its better doing it now than in the summer....but like I said....i'd like to have seen him given more time.

Not because I liked the football...quite the contrary...recent performances have been absolutely dire even when a positive result has been achieved...but simply because the one thing that the club have not had in the last decade or so (since the Keegan/Sir John Hall partnership ended really) is stability and continuity.

Cant have been easy either for Mike Ashley to stick himself in the middle of the supporters behind the goal...I'm sure he was teated with some respect and deference by his nearby supporters but having stood myself on the terraces for many years I am in no doubt whatsoever that he would have recieved a particularly vitriolic level of ear bashing from some quarters.

So...who next?

Mourinho??? I wouldnt say no but I've got more chance of getting a blow job off that hot tottie in accounts than Ashley has of landing "The Special One".

Jol??? Please god no...if he wasnt good enough for Tottenham...a club who seem to wallow in a similar level of crisis and mediocrity as Newcastle whilst somehow managing to pick up the odd trophy here and there...then I cant see the supporters taking to him at Nwcastle.

McLaren???? I'd rather have Jol thank you very much.

The bookies seem to be a good barometer and it seems like Redknapp has some weight behind him...but then again so does my missus...and lets be fair....Harrys allways turned out some good competent teams...but he's never made that final step into "being a contender" has he?

Sadly...we need a manager befitting the chaos that Newcastle evere seem to find themselves in. Step forward....

Mike Bassett.

Yes it really is that bad.

Haway the Lads.

OK...after that false start....no doubt casued by too much falling over beer...

So... its New Years Eve.... looking back on 2007 I realise that...

OK...after that false start....no doubt casued by too much falling over beer...

So... its New Years Eve.... looking back on 2007 I realise that there is much f+cked up with this world....

A world where our children are in so much danger...

From the age of 1 to 4 our children seem to be so much more likely to be ripped apart by a rottweiler than they likely to die of natural causes.

from the age of 5 to 13 our children seem more likely to die from the unwanted attention of a paedophiliac uncle...than they are to die of natural causes.

From the age of 14 to 21 our children seem more likely to die of gunshot or stab wounds at the hands of someone equally as young, as they are to die of natural causes.

So...whose fault is this????

It may come as a shock to many of you but I firmly belive that every man and woman over the age of 35 is totally responsible for the situation that society curently finds itslef in.

Simply because we have allowed ourselves to bend to the wishes of the PC brigade.

The three groups of folks who kids should be able to look up to and gain direction and inspiration from have all been hamstrung by misguided do-gooders who put the interests of animals, crooks and the criminally insane above the interests of "joe public".

Teachers, police and parents have been denied for many years the opportunity to chastise the children in their care/jurisdiction in the manner that they feel most appropriate given any particular situation. But the PC brigade would have us believe in the softly softly approach.

As a result youths roam wild in our streets at night, in the full understanding that our courts will do...maybe even can do.... nothing to stop them.

Meanwhile our polititcians wring their hands in angst and organise think tanks to determine appropriate soltuions.

For f&&ks sake folks...its simple..... build more prisons...put more folks in them for longer sentences...rehabilitate less of them.

Make folks understand that crime doesnt pay.

to my mind.... FIRST OFFENCE = FIRST CUSTODIAL SENTENCE.

If there is one thing that I'd like to see the government do to make this country a better place for our children in 2008 is to actually sentence criminals to a term that actually reflects their crime... and not only sentence them to that term...but make them SERVE THAT TERM!!!!

This blog is not really big enough to me to really expound on my thoughts in this area but hopefully the above is a reflection of just a fe wof the thoughts that bubble along the surface of my subconcious on a day to day basis!!!

2008....we need to do it better...we owe it to our childen!

Well, here we are in the hinterland between xmas and New Year, half of us have gone back to work and the rest of us linger forlornly with nothing more to look forward to but the next round of golf.

Allready, ill thought presents are gathering dust....what was Aunty Mabel thinking of with that jumper with the prancing reindeer??? why oh why couldnt you have got a single sleeve of ProV1's instead of one of those machines that puts your initials on balls???

The wife even decided to do an ebay search for "Unwanted Christmas Present" late on xmas day and found a dozen items....is that a bit sick or what??? Present being sold before the wrapping paper is disposed of down the dump!!!!

For my own part I did OK prezzie wise....lots of clothes - shirts mainly, only one pair of naff socks and no naff golf related gear.

Still...back on the course tomorrow in a winter pairs match hopefully the weathers gonna be OK though I dont really mind if its a bit crap... unlike in other sports i dont believe that poor weather is "a leveller" in golf. Low handicappers cope better with poor weather than higher ones in general so hopefully my 8 h/cap partner and I should see off the 18 'cappers were playing against.

tarar fer now folks
