Reasons why you're going etc.
Cheers.

Thinking of going to St. Andrews to do a degree in history, not really going for the golf, just a good university. If not maybe exeter or bristol perhaps.
University is vital nowadays, to get a decent job you need a good degree to give you a leg up.

I didn't go to University and I've done perfectly well. Not having a degree has not made any difference at all

I know quite a few people in their late twenties/early thirties who left school at various times, 16, 18 etc as well as plenty who've been to uni.
Those that left at 16 & 18 and have been successful have had to work extremely hard and have often been overlooked for jobs because they don't have the prerequisite qualifications, despite being 'qualified by experience'
Similarly I know plenty of people who went to uni and have ended up in jobs which they could have got without having a degree, mainly because they slacked off and/or expected to walk into a good job.
A good degree from a good university will open more doors than not having one. However only hard work and commitment will succeed in the long run.

I'm hoping to go to Loughborough to do Mechanical Engineering and possibly get on the golf team... I'll need to improve a lot, but at least it gives me two bites at the cherry so to speak if I don't make it as a golfer...

Think it depends on what you want to do for a living. For my job i need a degree but didn't go to UNI till i was 24.

Have to agree with Dren1, going to uni opens a lot of doors that might otherwise be closed but it all depends on what you want to do with your life.
eg Plumber/ Plaster, a degree is useless, NVQ are the way to go
If you want to do enginerring, again depends what type you want to do. If you want to do hands on enginerring then NVQ are they way to go but project management etc high end enginnering a degree is vital.
If you want to be Lawyer/ Accountant you have very little option but to go to uni.
Even doing a business studies degree opens doors that might be otherwise closed in banking etc.
Personally i think the way to go these days, is studying part time at uni while getting workexperience eg 4 days work, 1 day Uni, this gives you the best of both worlds.
But as previously mentioned if you a driven you will succeed on what ever you choose to do, straight to work at 16, NVG or degree or even further!

All I would say is that after 3 years and a degree from Nottingham University, all that Interviewers ever wanted to talk about was my time on the Uni Golf team and serving on their committee.
Although Uni isnt the be all and end all, it is becoming increasingly important to a "good" university, getting a good standard of degree and getting good social experences to chat about in Interviews. I was fortunate enough to get on to the graduate scheme that I wanted but I have alot of friends who have degrees that are worthless. Take my opinion for what it is worth, but I would say to anyone who is not sure about going to Uni, dont do it for the sake of it and dont "expect" a job at the other end.
