How about setting up a golf society?
Most clubs allow societies to play their courses (sometimes at reduced rate)
Pro's: You gain access to more courses (vary your game), not stuck playing the same courses all the time
Con's: A proper set of rules must be drawn up, appoint secretary, set up bank account....quite officious....

Whadaya think?

I'm thinking of something similar.
I was also thinking of a new strapline: How about "Moongolfer: Better than teeing off on Uranus". ?? Good, eh.

Society sounds like a good idea though.:)

I'd be up for that. Two of my best mates who are also golfers have moved to
Edinburgh so my golfing at other courses opportunities are restricted.

Sign me up!!! :)

I think a Golf Society is a good idea. It wouldn't necessarily be expensive as any trips could be used in conjucntion with green fee savers. For the past 2 years I have organised a golf weekend playing the Rosemount and Landsdowne golf course at The Blairgowrie Golf Club, these course are fantastic. The cost for this was £135, this included 2 rounds of golf and 1 nights bed & breakfast, fantastic value. A few of the other members and myself also went to Aviemore and played Boat of Garten and Granton-on-Spey, Boat of Garten being very good value at £31. I will be organizing another trip to Blairgowrie in the summer of 2007 and if a society is started I would be happy to open it to its members.
Members could state their home course and where geographically possible home and away games/ fourballs could be organised.
If a member who was travelling on business or pleasure to an area where a member played a game could be organised.
Competitions could between members who have a home course whether they play in Australia or North America for example a birdie table or taking your best score on each hole over a season, who had the lowest round.
Golf has the potential to be the best game in the world one day and the worst the next, anything to make it fun can't be bad.

yeah but i don't like hte bit about having to run a bank account ...

Would it not be possible to simply organise invitational weekends, put them in the calendar, and when they're full, they're full. We could get savings through the open fairways or some other voucher scheme ...

I'm just wary of bank accounts ... that's when real politics sets in  (i'm thinking the diving club here chopper ... you know what i mean!)

How about we also have some way of recording and comparing scores on the site (and I realise i'm giving myself homework here). e.g. how would a birdie card work...

The thing i thought might work would be to input your most recent score, which would expire after 2 weeks, and then we would have a league ...

Any thoughts?

Was out playing with cliche from GM and we discussed a league type thing where we all play at each others courses (home and away).

So basically we sign up for a league (either as individuals or teams of two) - divided by categories- and then its up to the individuals/teams to organise matches against each other. Good way to socialise and also get games at other courses on the cheap. i.e as a guest.

Bit diffrent from the society idea, but once set up easier to organise as its only 2 or 4 people.

The society thing could be all the members of the leagues meet x times a year for a tournament/get together.

I, and a few friends, use a site called http://www.mygolf-tour.com for scoring.

You can signup for free and can create your own league. You enter your own scores, and if you play against someone in the same league then it scores for that league aswell. Your 10 best scores over the year are counted in the league, so you strive to get better scores.

You get various stats recorded for FIR/GIR/birdies etc, and as each round is entered you see the improvement, or not, in your stats.

Check out the details on one of the golfers by selecting the name and then have a browse around.

Gord,
Totally agree with what you said regarding a bank account. Maybe the term society is misleading and not exactly correct. There would be no joining fee or dues. so no need for an account. For what I was thinking of there would be no need for an account as it would work much the same as ESAC in regards to trips that the person who was organizing an outing would collect deposits for the trip. I'm not sure how this would be controlled at the outset as any old Joe could join over the net and say he was organizing a trip, collect monies and vanish. It would be easy for us to organise trips to include the people who we know personally but the thought behind this is to meet new people, play new courses and have a good time. Obviously the season is all but over but we could start by members putting their putting their names/ courses forward for home and away Fourball games. We would be restricted at the moment but when Moongolfer becomes the BIGGEST golf forum in the Universe, Moongolfer Golf Club members will have a plethora of potential courses to play.
If anybody else could give their thoughts I would appreciate it.

I think all this league and scoring stuff will complicate the job.
All we need is an agreed date and some golfers to commit to it.
Once we have enough people we simply book the date with the club....turn up and play.
Each person would be responsible for paying his dues so no bank account required.
I would be happy to do the booking and negociating with the clubs.
Anyone want to volenteer to co-ordinate the dates and particepants?

I guess we wait a bit till we have a few more members from around and about the country?

but the society thing works for me.

I'm gonna have a think about a league format. and see how practical it is, in terms of setting up and linking to MG.
But I see it as just a way of meeting up and playing at each other courses really. If its too much hassle we can just organise a night out :) - that always works for me! :)

... ok ... i'm getting the idea.

I want to look into this online scoring thing, as I think there might be a bit of fun in that.

Let's mull it over ...

In fact, since we're playing on monday, you can elaborate then! ;)

It is possible to run a "society" without the bank account being set up. It was just an efficient way of collecting fees for possible rounds. I also think it can be done on a 'collect money on the day' basis
The initial idea being that (as we all know) most courses only allow non members to play when accompanied by a member, whereas societies can play unaccompanied!

I have a horrible feeling it's going to be impossible for me to take part until I can drive!
I'm not sure my mum would be too keen on driving me miles to play golf with random men. :(

Oh well. Only one and a half years to go.

Yeah - the petrol expenses might start to mount up if we're all driving all over the place for matches :D
We need an online score-card system, and an engine for comparing scores and constantly updating the high-score leader board. That way PP's mother can relax too
Although I must say, i'm starting to get a bit concerned about his studies ...;)
