View Full Version : Golf in Mexico/ USA - Play on your own?

Me and SWMBO have just booked our annual holiday, and this year we're off to sunny Cancun in March. The hotel has a Jack Nicklaus golf course attached to it, so I'll be looking to (and have permission to) play a couple of times while we're out there.
What are the usual rules when it comes to single players? The (very expensive) 18 hole rate includes a buggy, but I assume that they are factoring in 2 people sharing when they come up with the prices. Will they look to put me with another single or 3ball to make up the numbers or just send me on my way with an additional fee to pay for the buggy?
Anyone had a similar experience?

When I played in The States they put me with a couple of Texans. Great company and the golf was all of the same level! I had one cart and they shared the other. I guess it will all depend on how busy the course is, if you go at first light you may get a round on your own.

Just one question though: I'm on holiday, why the f*ck would I want to get up at first light???

Stu,
All you need to do is go to the pro shop, tell them you are a single and they will put you out with the next group that does not have 4 booked players. Note that the pro shop will go by what they have booked, not by who has/has not turned up. When you then go to the starter, he/she may change your tee time based on who has actually turned up. On a recent trip to the US I was given a tee time by the pro shop of about 1hr out (plenty of time for a warm-up on the range, beer etc) but when I got to the starter was asked if I would like to go straight out - no warm up !! (The beer part was solved when the cart girl came past on the second hole  )
As for the cart side, usually the price is the same whether there is one or two riders in the cart. I have only ever known it to be different on some municipal courses and then it states it up front and you have the option to walk.
Enjoy your trip.

Cheers mate, and welcome to the forum! :)
I'm glad that I'll probably be paired up as I enjoy the social part of the game too much to spend all that money and then play on my own.

This is the same as I have found whenever I have played in the US.
The only time I have played in Mexico was in Acapulco where I think we were the only people on the course. The buggy was included in the green fee, so were range balls. We also had a caddie per buggy, which, although they were included in the green fee, we did give them a tip at the end - they were really good, even found one of the balls that had been hit into the middle of the water hazzards!!
Here is a taster of what you might expect - this was Tres Vidas just south of Acapulco - rather more expensive than the courses at the hotel we stayed at where the courses were more forgiving (and not quite such a large water hazzard to one side:
Tough par 5 for those that have a left to right ball flight!!

Same hole but a better view of the water hazzard - the guys in white were the caddies.

Island green on one of the long holes:

Yup, I missed the green right!! Interesting "bunker" shot

That course certainly looks tough if you're a bit wayward! Speaking of which...
