No worries about it being Winter League.....but just to remind you that only one score can count from your home course (so make sure its more than 17 this time ok ?).
Don't think I can make it on the Sunday unfortunately - looking forward to giving the Addington another crack some time though.

Stu is indeed top of the league. But only because he has played 3 rounds and Vince has yet to play his 3rd - he'll only need 25 points to go top (and has scored 34 and 39 in his rounds so far, so its quite likely).
League positions updated at Masterscoreboard (http://www.masterscoreboard.co.uk/SocietyIndex.php?CWID=102303) (password ozik). The actual cards for todays rounds are wrong (awaiting full details) but the totals are right for everybody.

Good round today fellas, enjoyed playing with Paul (again!!!), Ross and TP, and once more TP played well when he's played in my group. Highlight of my day was obviously the 4 wood to 3 feet for eagle on the 15th, with the obvious low point being the sh*nked 6 iron into the trees on the very next hole! Talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous...

How come TP was DQ'd?
TP wasn't dq'd as such......its just that as he's already played The Addington in the Winter League, and scored higher last time out, his score from today won't count in the league.
You can only count one score from each course in the league, but you can play the course as many times as you like and use your highest score.

Another amusing afternoon on the golfcourse for me!
I unleashed the fury on a Par 5 hitting the green in 2 with a drive and a 5 wood. Putting for an eagle!
I then proceed to putt off the green from 30 feet and take a further 3 to get down for a bogey. I love this game
Great company and a fantastic course thanks to 3PW and TP for the invite. :D
The course is something else, every hole was superb with many different challenges. The greens were simply fantastic, shame my reading skills were left in the car park.

Great company and a fantastic course thanks to 3PW and TP for the invite. :D
The course is something else, every hole was superb with many different challenges. The greens were simply fantastic, shame my reading skills were left in the car park.
Once I have moved house membership is under serious consideration and is top of the list so far ;)
I think they were hiding with my 'shot to the green' game. Took until the 14th before I hit a Green in Regulation and (cf Par) that was the only one all day. Swing changes and a different set of irons probably the cause - but not knowing whether a hooky draw or a push is going to happen is rather disconcerting after driving to 'position A'. Thinning/duffing the subsequent chip is even worse! :madw:
Loved the greens and the entire course. Absolutely fabulous layout. Same I couldn't do it justice :twitcy: .
Thanks for the invite TP/3PW. Most of the (6) photos now on Photobucket - will load shortly.

Pushed a 3 iron off the tee into the trees and had to play a low punched 3 iron under the branches for my 2nd. Unfortunately it faded too much and I ended up in 'the pit'. The ball was originally in a crappy lie in the deep rough and only managed to advance it 10 yards forward into that bunker.
I did however hit the bunker shot to 12 feet, but unfortunately lipped the putt for bogey.
Glad I went in there though as it seems a shame not to experience the course as a whole...

Nah not a tight course IMO.
I'd even say my course was tighter, and i don't think its that tight.
Dougalston where Slicerdude plays is a tight course!
But saying all that....still a fantastic course with some really really tough and challenging holes.

It's not really tight in terms of width. It is tight however in terms of lines from tees. You really have to shave some heavy duty treeage on a lot of holes to get to the right position.

You never got near enough to the green to find out! You were in the woods right, basically on the next hole :twitcy:
And yes it does come into play as it forces you to aim left middle and then you have the "opportunity" of blowing in the woods left..or over the back

That depends really, if you stray to the right off of the tee (the bad shot for most golfers) then the line into the green is very tight, with the bunker definitely coming into play.
I would however agree that it's still at least one bad shot if you end up in it. I hit two of them! :o

I can't afford to lose any more height!
It's not tight in the 'traditional' sense of the word, but anything that is off line is in trouble in the trees, so you're punished more for bad shots than on most courses. If you're steady off of the tee and have a decent short game then you should score well there, and it's also not long enough to be daunting.
There are probably 6 holes to play defensively, 6 holes to attack and 6 holes to play sensibly.
Defend: 1, 3, 7, 9, 13, 17
Attack: 2, 4, 11, 14, 15
Sensible: 5, 6, 8, 10, 16, 18

Any hole i can birdie can't be a defend hole! So no to 1
I’d disagree. It’s your first shot of the day, is 165 yards uphill and has a bunker on the right which is serious double bogey territory. A nice easy safe shot to the left will leave an easy chip and a good chance for par.
Maybe that’s ‘sensible’ more than defending, but I wanted 6 of each… :D

The 2nd is an easy hole. It’s a big open fairway and a decent straight second shot will leave you with a wedge to the green (or even make the green in the summer). There isn’t any trouble around the green either. It’s a great birdie opportunity.
The 13th is not a hole to attack. You’re better off short than long and right rather than left. The big bunker next to the green isn’t a bad spot at all off of the tee. The green also is very tricky and so you have to be sensible with your chips and play for an area of the green rather than go at the pin. 4 is a good score on this hole and playing defensively it’s the worst that you should make.

Just kidding, I think The Add is a tough track.
I was lucky enough to par 5 and 8 and I agree with Rob, they are two very tough holes (although 5 played quite short last time we played). 8 is a beast (got lucky last time we played, hit a good 2nd there) and I always struggle on 16 (but that's because I go for the tightest 2nd shot in world golf!).

I love this concept of defend, attack and sensible but, IMHO, this is what normally results:-
Defend - you don't commit properly and, by trying to defend against no worse than bogey you ensure a good chance of a double. I particularly like the idea of being defensive on a par 3. Like most of us are good enough to play to a particular 'safe' spot. If we could do that we'd just bang the ball on the green:D
Attack - this mindset can usually guarantee that you end up scrambling for a double at best, though really scary numbers can result.
Sensible - amazing how often this results in good scores, as long as you can keep the defend/attack gremlins out of your mind
Sadly, sensible is the one mindset that slips away from you like trying to carry a handful of water. Or maybe this is all just my and my own internal demons:confused:

Actually it's yet another course where the Par 3s are the best holes - and there's some serious competition.
Can't be 'defensive' on the 1st - though left would normally be the bail-out area (not if you thin the wedge though).
I'm not actually a fan of Par 3s as starting holes - I'd prefer a bit of a warm-up before an accuracy (and length) test!
3rd - be happy with a 4. One of my 3 dodgy 3-woods off the tee. Great green!
7th - great wow factor short hole! Danger short, right, left or long! 4 pars in spite of none of us being on the green - two on fringe and two great up/downs!
11 - pin placed just behind the Captains Charity bunker. And probably a 4 club green. One to attack.
13. The Signature hole. Another dodgy (easy) 3-wood. But that's the club (unless pin at front, which would be seriously nasty).
17. Another great hole. Don't be short (heather) , long (short sided and junk) or left (trees). Knowing the course, TP was short, then long! Another up/down for me!
Of the other holes, it's hard to pick a favourite, but the Amen Corner is definitely 8 thru 10. I think I'd have to experiment with 12 to see how to play that 'best'. Probably thump a driver and see what the lie is. Even if in heather, a 5 is still on. Probably the quirkiest hole on the course - almost in North Berwick grade- though 16 (the other duffed 3-wood) comes close.
Only thing that puzzles is the 'bogey' vs par feature. The Stroke Index of the asterisk-ed par 5s reflected difficulty at par 4. However they seem to be played as par 5s. Were there 3? (or 4?). The SSS is actually 71 so for Par 68, someone may have allocated the difference. The Par + 3 for SSS reflects its toughness.
Don't quite understand what this 'Defend' concept is, so here's my take.
Attack: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (probably) 14, 15, 18
Sensible. 1, 3, 5, 13, 16, 17
Attack means going at the flag for the shot into the green - having set that shot up on previous shots. The fact that I generally failed miserably in both those respects (certainly the former - far too many GDFs) is beside the point! I might revise my approach to 5 (probably) and 16 (maybe) if I'd hit better tee shots.

Nice to see you guys enjoyed it and it's stirred up a bit of a debate too :D
Personally I was impressed with our group, at most I play in three balls, and I'd yet to see a group all make par on the 7th - it's just not the same unless some one is deep in the heather
Enjoyed the cool atmosphere and the great company - just a shame I blew up on 17 and 18 to hand the "trophy" to Stu :rolleyesw:
As for Sensible and Attack - it's all down to how good you are, or how good you are on the day. There's rarely a hole I couldn't play better by laying up...and that includes the par 3s! :D

Great photos Ross.
In your defence you could have said that "all the good players prefer playing out of bunkers than rough around the green"? :D
You just forgot that its usually for a 2nd or 3rd shot - not a 4th

It was indeed. Ball was only visible from above/in front!
The way I was playing wedges, I'd have thinned it and either imbedded it in the bank beyond or the trees behind the green.
The subsequent bunker shot deserved better than a lip-out.

Perspective can be a tricky thing, in this picture for example one might think Stu is far away, in reality the bunker is only about 7 foot deep.
It's the Father Ted/Dougal small/far away thing all over again.

Heard but not seen could also describe it.
Not 100% sure, but weren't there 4 instances of leaf/branch sounds off the 2nd tee?

OK, OK, rub it in why not ? You think I've forgotten ?
I'm playing West Hill in the morning before heading to Wentworth. If I play the same way it'll be 15 blobs on that course.
