View Full Version : Improving the lie.

I went up to our par three last night for a bit of practice, in particular chipping out of the rough.

I threw a few balls down into a bunch of clover, the stuff that hides balls until you stand on them, and the stuff I hate on the course.

After hitting a few balls I noticed that during the setup while I was getting lined up and waggling the stick about I was flattening the clover behind the ball.

Just resting the club lightly on the ground behind the ball was enough but after doing it a couple of times the ball was much more exposed at the back.

Does this constitute improving the lie?

No.

You are allowed to address the ball - the marshalls get grumpy if you go into the rough with a driver, address the ball, then change to a wedge.

Those people know who we mean... :radar:

That's pushing the bounaries a bit IMO.

No, that's climbing the fence, wandering across the next field, across the border, over the water, .....

Also known as blatant cheating!

I stood within 20 feet of a well known (international) tour golfer at Wentworth in this years PGA. He'd driven into the right ruff at the corner of the 18th. I watched, incredulously as he repeatedly pressed his 5 wood down behind the ball before he hit it.

I was a bit disappointed to be honest, it made me wonder if I'd really seen it.:mask:

Jumbo Ozaki is / was notorious for improving his lie with his driver. Greg Norman called him out on it once and it is widely accepted that this is the reason he nevers played outside of Japan.

Rule 13-2.

Damnit, I can't find it online anywhere, but I read about it in a magazine. The story was a Pro was widely known for doing this and was finally told to stop messing around in no uncertain terms, but it wasn't a rules infringement. Can't find a link, so I can't defend the truth of it.
