Oh yes!

Oh shite( I hear people say :))

Just a nudge to see if the Hoebridge/Camberley Posse want to meet up before Xmas to finish off the year in style(see Chris Stott for his tailor)

Thinking about a 27 hole game in November(not around 5th obviously).
As the last two have been in Surrey, thinking about Herts/Essex or Kent.

Number 2(Fieldsy) is currently scouring the web.

Any good venues please feel free to nominate..

There is a poll on what you'd prefer.....cheap and cheerful like Hoebridge or a tad more expensive like Camberley

NO SPAMMIN PURLEASE.

Whatabout that Princes place or Cinque Ports? Something Linksy would be great in the freezing wind and rain, no?

Otherwise Walton Heath or East Sussex National sound good.

Please make it a weekend.

Well I didn't know did I , and some of these places offer cheap prices for societies anyway. Cinque Ports is less in the winter, and much less with a member. We have someone here from Princes don't we?

Royal Cinque Ports is better for a winter league affair where people can lob 70/80 quid at it without thinking if they so wish.

East is right hand side of the map. West is left hand side of the map. Now ask yourself where I live in Hertfordshire.....left or right hand side? I for one would say that an 18 hole event would be better given the fact that you can't guarantee the weather or light. If I was being controversial I'd also suggest a Saturday or Sunday rather than a weekday as an awful lot of people are running out of holiday allowances, especially close to Xmas.

My preference would also be Herts or Middlesex for obvious reasons, but a course with good drainage is obviously a must.

Manor of Groves
Blakes
Thorndon Park
Austin Lodge

I've played Manor of Groves, and live only a few miles up the road. It's an OK course, roughly splits into an old half and a new half. The old stuff is quite interesting, but the new bit is a bit dull as it just goes up and down over a stream. It's alleged to be sand based so is playable in most weather conditions. It's located in High Wych which is a few miles off the M11.

As I said before, Blakes has been recommended by several friends. It's a new course, alleged to be very linksy in design. One of my friends won a short term memership that ran over a winter, he seemed to be playing it regularly.

Having played four Essex courses (Hartswood, Bently, South Essex G&CC, Warley Pk) around the M25/A12 area in winter I can vouch that the clay based soil lends itself to damp, claggy, wet, soggy ground conditions.

I dont think youre going to get a truly nice and dry course in that neck of the woods in the late autumn/winter if the weather has been inclement.

I think I know someone who plays Austin Lodge, not seen him in a while though.

Google (links golf essex drainage) gives me:
Five Lakes Golf Club (Links Course), Essex
Orsett Golf Club
Sitting on a sand base, which is itself a rarity in Essex , the drainage is exceptional
Blakes Golf Club
A clever drainage system and USGA standard tees and greens means that the course is playable all year round. Indeed it is notable for its fast, firm greens and challenging bunkers.

Garon Park Golf Complex, Essex
The overall sand based soil on the course allows for good drainage and therefore all year round play.

Anyone heard of them?

<edit> Okay Blakes already nominated by Fieldsy and has a great reputation.

Blakes is looking like a serious contender with good drainage and a linksy feel which we've not had yet.

Thats debatable - obviously

Wild aspersions: Most people on here are members of clubs who play in competitions at the weekends

The better courses won't let societies on before 11/11:30 at the weekends. We will struggle to get 8*3 balls round before it goes dark.(November)

Personally - I'd rather play on a Monday or a Friday where we have the course to ourselves for a bit more money, rather than standing on the 14th tee watching the sun set on a boggy course waiting behind masses of golfers on a late Saturday afternoon.

I'd rather pull my teeth out....

Easy, I just didn't want to beat the mod on our first meeting. I guess most others felt the same. Coopster obviously didn't realise who you were......

I am just happy one of us Southerners was able to beat the Northern Bandit ;) otherwise we would never have heard the end of it on these forums.

I am definately going to try to get to a Scottish event next year and try to do a prize raid...

Whatabout that Princes place or Cinque Ports? Something Linksy would be great in the freezing wind and rain, no?

Otherwise Walton Heath or East Sussex National sound good.

Please make it a weekend.

Would back TP up on linksy flavour as many courses could be ankle deep in mud at that time.

Princes has offered goo deals. CP is on my list of 'need to play' (as an Open Course!) but could be pricey. Someone at Camberley also mentioned Hayling .... (Island?)

Pedham now booked for the winter Masters.

Looking into a winter league do at Princes early next year.

Will book the Blakes(Essex) one for the summer masters next year or one in Herts

I'm investigating another (secret) course for next autumn(Surrey)

I guess the spring Open is the Battle of Great Britain again - S3 is organising.

Could be a lot more interest, but 32 would seem about right and if its a lot more we would have to hold qualifiers

Anyway, if one is to play at big venues before one passes from this mortal coil one must apply a certain cost/benefit ratio.

How many of the Top Ten courses in the world could you have played instead of getting your driver? :p

Having played near neighbours Birkdale, Formby and Hillside (and Hoylake not far as the crow flies) I can report that this neck of the woods is stunning golf country. Dare I say better than East Lothian?

Would be good to complete the Southport collection - specially another of Braid's designs.

Worth considering just exactly when though, as the cost could be a significant barrier.

What about Woodhall Spa? (http://www.woodhallspagolf.co.uk/coursesintroduction/)

It has 2 courses. Have day 1 and a Ryder Cup sort of thing(North v South) and day 2 and an individual on the other course.

I think 3PW phoned there recently and got a rate of £115 for 2 rounds of golf and hotel over the winter(November).

I can vouch for the Bracken being a cracking course and the Hotchkin is meant to be better.

Would be somewhere in the middle for all of us, if a bit to the east.

I've stayed at woodhall spa, before i played golf and its great place, and the golf courses are fantastic from reputation.

But it takes almost as long to get to as London does from Glasgow, and it can't be that close to London either? Also its not as easy a drive as M6.

Will think about it.

Glasgow to Woodhall Spa: 5 hours 42 mins

London to Woodhall Spa: 3 hours 13 mins

I suppose you're looking for a venue 4 1/2 hours for both, but either way it's going to be a trek and probably an overnighter.

Good all year round. We had temporary greens for a couple of weeks last Feb and from Jan to Feb it is pick and place in the first cut but apart from that...think they were closed for 1 1/2 days this year (Since Nov 06). 1 day was fog and the half day was lightening.
The other good thing is the rough is pretty easy in the winter! Ian if you are ever in the area give me a shout and you can come and see.
