View Full Version : Hippo Hex Driver

After losing the faith with my good old Integra Sooo Long and UST 65 shaft I decided it was time for a change.

I picked up a Hippo Hex 10° with a regular Aldila NVS shaft from Affordable golf for £100 (they've since increased the price to £115).

Played with it three times now and I am not one normally to say that my new driver gives me xx more yards, but in fairness to the Hippo, I would say it has added a good 10 yards to my drives and straightened them out as well. For me a good drive is 250 yards and when I was catching it well with the Hippo it was well exceeding that. And the straightening of the drives cannot be emphasised enough. If I did a bad swing it would still go wide but a good steady swing and it is straight down the middle. The technology does seem to work, at least for me.

The shaft feels nice and solid and the overall combination gives an impressive mid to high flight. They also do a 12° HL (High Launch) model but I'm glad I didn't go for it as the flight on this is plenty high enough for me.

The sound may not appeal to all and the feeling at connection is a little dead but, hey, it works. I even prefer the shape of the head to the other square drivers.

For £100 compared to the big names I would say it's well worth a try. I'm very happy with it.

For £100 IMO you are much better going on ebay and getting a Ping,TM,Titleist etc. For instance you get easily get a 905 or a G2.

I totally agree, TM 500 series drivers are bargains on e-bay too. I saw an excellent condition R510 TP with a fujikura speeder 553 shaft go for about £70:yes:

edit: actually, R510 TPs seem to regularly sell for about £50.

Even in the Trades section here you can get better value for money for that kind of price. You can have my 905s (http://www.moongolfer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=81513#post81513) for a lot less than that :D

But if it works for you than it is worth the money!

But this is always what gets me. WHY am I better getting a bigger named brand which may not work when I can get a Hippo that does?

There is a tremendous amount of snobbery about in golf equipment and for me it is not the label on the club but the performance it delivers. I'm sorry to say that I was expecting responses like this but I would have to ask first if you have actually tried the Hippo or are just dismissing it because it is not a Titleist, TM, Ping etc? The latter?

Look at my club list and I have brand name products but I look for value and performance and not the badge. The shaft is a good one, the product delivers, I am hitting further and straighter than before so HOW am I going to do better? By having a better wood cover on the bag? I'd rather hit a 'lesser' brand better than struggle with a big name.

And on top of that, there is a great deal of satisfaction in out-driving people with the branded drivers, especially if they've had a good snigger at the club first.

Rant over but sometimes it does get my goat.

Couldn't agree more Mate, I'm like yourself, and will try anything out regardless of cost and who made it, and if it works all the better because that's what counts, I've also sorts in my bag, from top brands to cheapies, and they're in there cause they work for ME, no other reason.

Good luck buying from Ebay, you just never know what Chinese fake your going to get so feel free boys, remember its the badge that counts. ;)

Well if your daft and dont ask questions and look at the sellers feedback then you will get hit with a fake , e.g. seller churning out SQ's for buy it now at £50 with no pics, unable to provide serial number of club and their seller's name is See Yu Cumin

No shit Sherlock..........................;) counterfeiters are far from stupid and cover their tracks well, including hacking into others accounts, they've also been marking their tat with genuine serial numbers for some time now, problem being they're all the same number so be afraid very afraid you bargain hunters out there. :p

Obviously you have to be wary, but as long as you're sensible then buying from ebay shouldn't be at all dangerous. My golden rules are:

1. Never buy new equipment unless it's from a Pro Shop with an ebay account and you can ring and speak to them.

2. Check the recent feedback for other genuine golf sales or buys. If they've never bought or sold anything golf related, or if they've sold more than one of the same item, run a mile.

3. Ask for more photos of the equipment. If they're a genuine seller then they should be happy to oblige.

4. Ask several questions, even if they are very trivial. Dropping in golf terms helps, and it often helps to ask them to compare it to other drivers/ irons that they've used in terms of length, forgiveness etc.

By doing this you should pretty easily be able to get a feel for whether something feels right or not, and if it feels even slightly fishy then look elsewhere.

Ebay is a good source of picking up used golf equipment at cheap prices. It should not be used to try and find the bargain of the century or to source new irons (IMO).

So that's where you got your MP-Ts from...

Addendum

This thing is still flying!

Everyone I have played with so far has commented on how straight and long I hit the ball. And when they try it they all comment about how nice it feels. A decent shaft helps of course. I'm up and out there with the TMs, Nikes, Cobras and Callaways so there is a kind of peverse satisfaction to that :D

Value for Money? It does what it says on the tin - 10 out of 10 :)
Pose factor? 0 out of 10 when it's in the bag, much more when it's hit. ;)
Depreciation? Undoubtedly poor but I don't change my clubs that often and when it hits like this why should I? :p
