Played recently and the following happened.
I removed the flag and placed it on the green, ready for my mate to take his first putt. He over hit the ball and hit it wide right of the hole and it hit the flag on its path. So
1. Who is at fault
2. Whats the penalty
3. Whats happends next with the ball, leave it where its finished, or estimate where it would finish ?

Two strokes penalty. Play it as it lies.
The player is at fault for hitting the flag stick, not his opponent.
You're in the clear :)

I let him off and he beat me by 1 stroke.
This is the guy I refered to as the lucky golfer.

Spot on.
And some additional info - isn't there always another variation!
If you see that this is about to happen, you must not pick the flag up! Otherwise it's a penalty against you (1 I think).

So hed get 2 shot penalty for hitting the flag then another 2 shots for grabbing the flag....
Might start leaving the flag closer to the hole
But I guess thats not in the spirit of the game

I personally think it can be a very stupid rule, when for instance the ball only justs reaches the flag, then there is no real gian from hitting the flag which was an accident.

He deserved to be penalised. Hit hit about 8ft past and 6ft right of the hole before it hit the flag, and it was still moving.

Yeah! He deserved it! Nick his towel and kick the legs out from under his stand bag too! :mask:

I wasn't using your playing partner as an example!
I just meant that i have seen a few instances where the flag hasn't been left that far away and someone has just overhit there put and just reached the flag. In that instance i don't think the penalty is ok.
Of course the prat that leaves the flag near enough in to the hole for this to happen needs shooting.
BTW these are just examples i have seen on near greens.
