Well since this years Winter seems to have started early (in about June wasn't it ?), the first Winter League event is scheduled to take place on September 2nd at The Addington. I hope to be able to confirm another event taking place in September soon.

Today I have booked 4 tee times for 6 October 2007 (starting at 11am) at my home club, Bushey Hall, which is just outside Watford, not far from the M1 and M25 (ie it's inside the M25). It's ideal for those of you in West and North London, as well as Essex, Surrey, Herts, Beds & Bucks. Obviously I will be taking one place, so there are currently 15 spare places available for those wishing to play.

Cost of the round is £30 plus £1 for your league fee. Anyone interested, please let me know asap.

1. Fieldsy
2. 3PW
3. Shankboy
4. Wilcove
5. MacBludgeon
6. Jahmoo (fingers crossed )
7. Mattyarse

10. Cashmere Inserts
11. Devilswater
12. Vince Baby
13. Coopster
14. GETINTHEHOLE!
15. Sam The Eagle
16.

Currently not coming: Tin Pot (check back in an hour, his status will probably have changed again)

I'm almost definite for this will confirm in the next week or so.
Trying to hunt down Ian for a cheap round at Wentworth the day before.(if he can sort it out)

It says on your site £35 at the weekends - got a special deal?

Your course looks nice and WIDE! :)

Just had a little look at the Bushey Hall website, it looks really nice.

A couple of monster par 4's

Also the 13th which is a par 4 (479) is longer than the 5th which is a par 5 (442), ive never seen that before, crazy stuff :twitcy:

Yeah the 13th is two straightforward big hits to the green (or in my case a drive, a chip out of the cack, a hooked hybrid, a sliced mid-iron and a pitch over one of the bunkers on the right). The 5th however has a pond and bunker section between 190 and 260 yards, so for the non-monster-driving-folks its something like three 7 irons down to the green unless you are prepared to risk a big hit and go OB left or right......
The 5th does cause some controversy - the long-termers preferred it as a par 4 (before the pond was put in), whereas I think its a good risk-reward hole as a par 5.
You coming along then M40TT B ?

Go on then Fieldsy - can you put me down for this one please?

Your course looks great btw. I presume you are looking to romp away with a result playing on home turf?

Btw, what is the format of the Winter League then? Stableford / Strokeplay? Full handicap?

Cheers

I'm on holiday otherwise I would have been up for this. Perhaps I can organise one at my club after the clocks go back. It would be too expensive otherwise, green fees are pretty high as I can only sign in 3 people at a reduced rate.

Anyone interested, let me know.

I am an unknown on getting to Bushey as the moment. SWMBO is talking about going away that weekend as it is one of two weekends I have not booked a golf game on between now and the end of the year. I will be able to confirm attendance about 5 days before, so put me on the reserve list.

Also, when I originally voted, I voted that I could host an event. That will now not be the case this year as my course is having a lot of work done on a couple of holes which has put them on temps between now and Spring next year.

I'll ask about max number of guests for a weekend next time I'm there (probably tomorrow evening).

Hey, I've just found out that Watford is INside the M25! According to multimap I'm only an hour away, so I'll see if I can get permission.

It's saturday 6th october, yes? Is there a meal involved, or am I allowed to go home after the round?

Where in the thread does it mention a meal ?!

No meal, the restaurant (sorry, room with tables) will be open pre-round for bacon butties should you wish to buy yourself one, and the bar will be open post-round for beer an food should you wish to purchase either os these itemes. The only mandatory item is teeing off on the first hole - you can go home immediately after that if you want

From what I remember this is not much difference between the yellows and the whites.

I will give a course description a go and let Fieldsy amend anyhting I may have got wrong.

1st – Long Par 4 - Best hole on the course IMO and one of the best opening holes in the area. Long par 4 left to right dogleg. If you are Lowho long, you can attempt to go over the tree on the corner.

2nd – Short Par 4 - Normally a queue on this tee as everyone waits for the green to clear then no one hits it. Should be an easy par or good birdie chance if tee shot hit straight. There are 2 pot-like bunkers left and right of the fairway 80 yards from the green that you cannot see from the tee.

3rd – Par 4 with late left to right dogleg. A long drive down the hill aimed at the pylon is needed here. Anything too far right will mean the trees block you line to the green. Shorter hitters will have to decide it they are brave enough to take on the tall trees on the corner or lay up.

4th – Par 4 that plays longer that the card due to it being up hill all the way. Fairway slopes left to right all the way up the hole. Bunker to the right of the green is tough to get out of due to the green being 10 foot above you. 2nd shot will have ball below your feet. Green also has a massive left to right slope on it.

5th – tricked up short Par 5 - Used to be a very good Par 4 but too many drives into the houses on the right means a water feature has been added to discourage people using driver here. Again, if you are Lowho long you will have a chance to carry the trouble but you have to be straight. Anything left or right is dead on this hole. Lay up is 5-8 iron depending on wind and tee position. Sensible way to play this hole is 6 iron, 6 iron, wedge for a good birdie chance. If you are close enough to the water feature the green is in range for the long hitters with a 3 wood but you need to be straight.
N.B. At least one of your 4-ball will hit the power lines and get a free re-load. Not sure if you will find your ball though.

6th – long Par 3 – thin green that is difficult to hit. A par here is a good score.

7th – Uphill Par 4. A good drive will leave less than 150 to the green. Most 2nd shots end up short due to bunker on left 15 yards short making 2nd shot look shorter than it really is.

8th – Big bunker in front of green is in range from the tee. No need to be a hero here. Just lay up short of it and hit a wedge into the green. There is 20 yards between the back of the bunker and start of the green. Birdie chance

9th – Downhill par 3 – Good club selection gives a birdie chance. Green slopes back to front.

10th – Long par 3 to a two-tier green – This tee shot is all carry. If you are going to miss the green miss it long as ball can feed back onto the green. Left is dead and right is normally a lot of trouble. Short will leave you a difficult uphill chip from an uphill lie. When on the green hope your ball is on the right tier. Depending on the speed of the greens, if you are on the top tier, you can putt your ball off the green at the front and have a 30 yard chip back up the hill.

11th – par 4. Blind tee shot. Without being on the tee, I cannot remember the line. There is a tree on the right that you want to be left of.

12th – Short par 4 dogleg right to left. Do not go left here as you are blocked out. Not too much trouble if you are wide right here. Good birdie chance with even with an average drive.

13th – Long, long par 4 dogleg right to left. A long drive need to have a chance to go for the green. Too far left blocks yourself out with a line of trees and right will leave you too far into the green. Line off the tee is just to the right of the bunker that is on corner of the dogleg. Green is surrounded by bunkers so if you miss the green you are likely to be in one of these.

14th – Short par 3. Big flat green. Any ball that hits the green give a birdie chance.

15th – Long par 5. This is a 3 shot par 5. Trouble all the way down on the left and right of this hole. Tough to get your 3rd shot close here due to the first 1/3 of the green being an uphill slope similar to the one on the 2nd green.

16th – Long par 4 right to left dogleg that seems to always be into the wind. A long drive up the right hand side of the fairway is needed here to see the green. Anything left or not long enough will be blocked out by the corner of the dogleg. Green slopes from back to front.

17th – Par 3. Pond is more for effect than any trouble. Plays a club longer due to being uphill.

18th – Par 4 - OOB all the way down the right on this hole. A lay up short of the ditch will leave 8iron-wedge into the green. There is no reward for being the other side of the ditch. If you are going in with a mid-long iron, it needs to be an accurate hit as bunker at the front has a steep face and pond and OOB behind the green come into play.

1st – Long Par 4 - Best hole on the course IMO and one of the best opening holes in the area. Long par 4 left to right dogleg. If you are Lowho long, you can attempt to go over the tree on the corner. 190 to the marker at the other side of the valley and 230 to the green from there.

Bunker to the right of the green is tough to get out of due to the green being 10 foot above you. 2nd shot will have ball below your feet. Green also has a massive left to right slope on it. Line for your tee shot is the big oak tree up near the green, anything right of this will roll into the rough on the right hand side and make your approach have to carry the deep greenside bunker.

5th – tricked up short Par 5 - Used to be a very good Par 4 but too many drives into the houses on the right means a water feature has been added to discourage people using driver here. N.B. At least one of your 4-ball will hit the power lines and get a free re-load. Not sure if you will find your ball though. The tee has now moved back to the old tee's, so your first shot needs to be a fade round the trees. I'd love to see someone drive the pond/bunkers but I don't think theres any of you man enough......

6th – long Par 3 – thin green that is difficult to hit. A par here is a good score. Aim straight over the bunker and it might run on if you're long enough.

7th – Uphill Par 4. A good drive will leave less than 150 to the green. Most 2nd shots end up short due to bunker on left 15 yards short making 2nd shot look shorter than it really is.

Good guide Martin, pretty much spot on, except for:

9th – Downhill par 3 – Good club selection gives a birdie chance. Green slopes back to front.

That's a bit like saying 'Kelly Brook isn't too shabby', i.e. a MASSIVE understatement! I haven't seen many other greens with such a severe slope. You also forgot the lateral water hazard that runs along the green meaning that anything short is wet.

If you can hit the ball straight off the tee then you stand a good chance of scoring well on this course, with only a couple of holes where length off the tee is a real advantage.

Go on.....which are your bogey holes ?

The 4th, 13th, 15th and 16th.

Never seem to hit the green in 2 on the 4th and then regularly hit a bad chip and poor first putt. 6 is common score for me.

The 13th I would have to call an unlucky hole for me. Have regularly been in a green side bunker for 2 and walked off with a 6. Last time I played it, I missed the green left, but thought it would be in one of the bunkers. Never saw the ball again so can only guess that it ran though the bunkers and over the 14th tee into the trees.

15th is a frustating hole as with a par 5 you expect a birdie chance or an easyish par. Regularly hit a bad 3rd shot to leave it short or 3 putt that green.

16th is my worst though. Either hit left and the corner blocks me out or hit it right into the rough so makes going for the green impossible. Last time I played it, I could see the green and had a 5 wood in my hand. Pulled that shot and got a lucky bounce off the ferns to stop it going OB. Ball dropped down at the edge of the ferns 120 yards from the green. Then flew the green with my 3rd and found it at the bottom of the slope behind the green. Walked off with a 7!

Which are you bogey holes?

13 is a fecker. Always into wind and long for the likes of me with my teeny-weeny drives. A 6 will make even me smile here.

5 - the tees have been moved to the old "old tees" on the right now so you need to play a fade round the trees.Invariably I smack it straight into the trees or start it perfectly with no fade. Oh, and its OB LEFT AND RIGHT now :) Get past the pond/bunkers in 2 and its an easy hole....but getting there has been tricky since they moved the tees (having just got the hang of this hole I was more frustrated than most when the tees changed)

16 - Long.....again into the wind. And if its been raining this green will be very slow. Almost parred this for the first time ever last time out. Again, I'll play to be on in 3 and hope for a 2 putt to get me 3 points I'll be happy with.

18 - Struggle for some reason to hit a straight tee shot here. No idea why!

I can screw up all the holes on any given day but these are the ones I struggle most with.

Even though left was not OB when I last played it, your ball was pretty much dead if you went into the trees.

So, do you have to hit a 6 iron fade just short of the water hazard on the 5th or is it a long iron needed for a lay-up. It was 160 yards when I last played it.

I guess the yellows are now the same distance as the old whites but you need to play a pretty big fade or get lucky ;) You'll be looking at around 180 to be short of the pond......

You used to be able to play out of the cack on the other side of the bushes on the left. The OB posts are a yard inside the hedge line on each side now......

I'm hoping that I haven't stopped growing yet. When I get to Fiedlsy's age (I'm guessing 45?) maybe I'll be 6ft?

You think you're gonna make my age? Don't count on it.....

and surely everyone knows I'm younger than 45 ?

Fieldsy is currently playing at Batchworth as we speak, so I wouldn't expect him to reply until later tonight.

Last I heard we were still a man shy. Check your PM.

I'd watch that man!! He's likely to go under par for any back 9 anywhere at anytime :D

Coopster - Not Matty (GG's are good - but not that good )

Haven't confirmed the scores yet but it would seem that the Autumn Masters Champion took the wooden spoon in todays Winter League event :)

Guy and gals,

Will have to miss tomorrow, not sure my back will hold out for 18 holes, as a drive away will miss out. Very Sorry:(

Thanks for everyone turning up for a (hopefully) enjoyable round of golf, and special thanks to the Reverend McDaisley for taking time out of his busy preaching timetable to play some golf with us. I do wish I'd had my camera with me.....

Scores are on Masterscoreboard (http://www.masterscoreboard.co.uk/SocietyIndex.php?CWID=102303) with updated league positions. (password ozik).

And yes I was last on my home course. Bring the p*sstaking on........

Thanks for organising a good day Chris. I really enjoyed it (apart from the first 5 holes or so!) and hope to play the course again sometime.

yep, second that, many thanks to Fieldsy for a great day, anyone else hosting on their home course should take note of his extreme courtesy. I've never seen anyone so devoted to organising a day that they're prepared to sacrifice their own game to that extent:eek:

Thanks also to my playing partners, Wilco, Chip Unsure and Vince Baby. Three of us were civilised returining respectable low 30's scores, but Vince ruined it by winning the day with 39. Very impressive to watch and good company all round.....Al

ps. must mention Shankboy, 18 points on the front 9 and cruising, came home in 5 points for a 23 total...........class

As said by everyone else, many thanks Chris for organising this. Had a very enjoyable round with Al, Mike and Rob.

Thankfully my putting had improved a bit overnight. But for a ball oob, the score could have been a bit better....

And it was all going so well till the second sentence there!

The only positive thing I can take out of the day (other than everyone else enjoying themself and Shankboy's "man of the cloth" outfit) was that I should have been playing in our monthly stableford, and had I done so I would have been ripped to shreds by my normal playing partners.

Anyone fancy a repeat in late March when hopefully Ben will have taught me how to play this game a little better ?

Quality day fieldsy, you can be my wingman any time!! :) :)

Thoroughly enjoyed myself awesome front 9 followed by me issuing the last rites to my game on the back 9.

Cheers to benito(for taxi service) get in the hole and stu :) :)

Sorry about the outfit.
Sorry Stu about the shirt it definatly turned those birds away in St Albans :( :(

I hope that the tongue in cheek aspect came over properly there. I've organised many golf events at my home course, and elsewhere, and I've always found it hard to perform with all the other stuff on my mind. I genuinely take my hat off to anybody that organises an event, it's a lot more work than some might realise.

If any of you fancy it, and can explain how I need to go about it on here, I'm happy to host a Winter League event at my home course. Link is here et me know what you think.....Al
