Just thought I'd put this one up here for general notice.

A lot of people I've played with over the two years I've been playing are unaware that you can tee off again in almost any situation.

The player alone determines an Unplayable Lie and can do so at anytime unless it falls into a water hazard, and choose to tee off again under penalty of one stroke.

Of course one would hope that it's a rare choice that you'd make, but nevertheless it is an option, and entirely acceptable.

Rule 28 - Ball Unplayable
The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.
If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:
a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5)
(Other options omitted)

Rule 20-5(a) Making Next Stroke from Where Previous Stroke Made
When a player elects or is required to make his next stroke from where a previous stroke was made, he must proceed as follows:
a. On the Teeing Ground: The ball to be played must be played from within the teeing ground. It may be played from anywhere within the teeing ground and may be teed.

You use that one in a scenario where you top/duff/shank one itno trees 10 yards from the tee and have no swing.

So you can re-take any tee shot you like then and re-tee it for 3 off the tee even if it's not lost?

Interesting :eek::twitcy:

Absolutely, and I'm thinking about using it on some par 3s where missing the green is often the beginning of a long nightmare.

Essentially everyone is aware of taking a provisional ball, cracking it to tap-in territory and then finding their first in a pile of dung.

Obviously you're still risking another mess up, but at the right time and with confidence it could be a shot saver.

You can also re-tee if in (or lost in) a Water Hazard - exclusion in the 'Unplayable' rule is solely because the re-tee is covered in the Water Hazard one.

Remember too that you must declare the first ball 'unplayable' (or not say anything, so it will automatically become the ball in play) before doing the re-tee rather declaring the 2nd ball a provisional - which is only to cover the 'lost ball' event.

Can see using this when you have put your original tee shot in such a bad position that you know that you are likely to make a big score.

Funny this rule has never really been exploited in the pro ranks.
