Get one of the instructors to give you a golf specific workout routine!
That way you will be working the right areas and benefit more in terms of golf.

Start slow, and gradually work up. Not a wise thing to rush into, maybe risk injury and/or sicken yourself being sore all the time. Certainly ask the instructors to devise a specific routine for you personally, and see what way you can increase that over the first few weeks.

Depending on the workload and workrate a 60 minute workout may be too much to start off with, I go to the gym 3-4 times per week. 2 days weights arms, core and legs. 2 days cardio running machine, rowing machine.
I go to the gym monday and tuesday with wednesday off then back thursday and friday I found this lets my body rest so Im putting as much effort in every time I go.
At first, I started with a low weight range and a high number of reps and have slowly developed into a higher weight range with low short bursts or reps.
Even though I have been going to the gym I have not found I have put that much weight in muscle, When I started going to the gym I was around 12 stone and now I weigh 10 stone 4 pounds. I went down to just under 10 stone at one point as I lost weight but now as I have gained muscle I have found that Im starting to get in to the shape I dreamed of when I first started.
My game has dramatically improved with my handicap dropping to 8 from 13, Ive seen a good increase in distance, around 15-20 yards and My ballstriking has improved as Im swinging smoother yet hitting it further.

You should be able to kill two birds with one stone with the right routine. Just give the instructor a good idea on what you want to achieve and make sure to follow it. If you want to do weight loss first then get a program for that and you can always get them to modify it when you have progressed.

You answered your own statement above. Low weight and more reps will tone the muscles and not really increase the muscle. Higher weights and lower reps will increase the muscle. Now that you have increased the weight and lowered the reps you will see a increase in muscle and weight.

Yes, I had to start with low weight ranges in the first place to lose the weight as that was my intention to start off with, when I found that I had made a good base to put muscle on i then began with higher weights and less reps

i dont wana burst ya bubble but the key in any diet is not losing the weight, its keeping it off- unless your allready a gym ho then the chances are that your will get bored with it after 6 months-by this time your body will be used to the burn of the gym and ultimatly your metabolism will slow right down.
diets work best if your can lose weight in your normal everyday environment :)
