View Full Version : Winter League (reposted)

OK, seeing as the original thread was lost on “Black Thursday” this is a rewrite…..
As discussed in earlier threads I am contemplating organising a winter league for Moongolfers everywhere. At this point I have no idea how many people are interested in the concept, so I’d like to gauge interest now with a view to starting the league in October. I don’t have a full rulebook yet but here are the ideas I’ve got so far (with a little help from other people here).
• The league will run October – April (nationally??) with a final event to be organised towards the end of the season for prize giving.
• Events will be organised by individuals from the board at their home clubs.
• Each event must be open to all, but may have a maximum number of entrants (should your club enforce this)
• To qualify as a league event, there must be at least 2 visiting moongolfers (i.e. if 4 people from one club play together, this does not constitute a league event)
• Each event will be stableford format played off your full handicap at that time. We might have to consider imposing cuts for people scoring over, say, 40 points to limit handicap abuse.
• Your league points will be made up of your three best points totals from the season (only one of which may be at your home club).
• At each event, players will be responsible for paying their own green fees and will pay a small (£1) league fee to go towards a prize fund.
• Event organisers will book appropriate tee times, collect league fees and submit them plus scorecards to myself for updating the league.
The idea is that there’s little else to play for during the winter so a Moongolfer league will add a bit of interest during the off-season. Obviously this concept needs to be developed fully before October, but in principle could I ask everyone if they are interested in playing in this league, and if they might be prepared to organise an event at their own clubs through the winter.
Thanks

So only 8 potential members spread across England. Not sure how workable it'll be with so few numbers......I thought we might get 20+ at least from the forum, especially the people in and around London and the Home Counties.
Has everyone who wants to be in voted or are you hanging back for some reason ?

The league is interesting but not on a national basis. Much as I'd like to tee it up with you guys in far flung parts of the country, it takes too much time out of a weekend (weekdays are out) with Notso needing fatherly care and attention :)

You only have to attend 3 events Longshot......where they are is irrelevant. You could choose any 3 in Surrey if we have enough people, the National idea was just to make it interesting to more people. We can make ir regional if that brings in more people. Any thoughts ?

I'd be up for it, take your point that there is no need to travel too far, i know guys on here are members at Addington, Hoebridge and Foxhills to name but 3 near me...
all welcome to my little 9 hole track but unlikely to impress :-(

I'm interested, but am not sure if I'll be a member at Hendon over the winter or not. I'll definitely be up for playing in a few weekend events though.

Okay, Fieldsy has roped me into this by saying I only have to play three games! One of which is already organised.
I should expect to still have two to play by the time April comes around.... :p

Probably won't be able to organise an event over the winter as the gogs is very strick about allowing (or not) visitors in winter.

You can still be involved without organising an event......you'll just have to turn up to three elsewhere. One of which you already are......

So that'd be a further two Mike

Depends on numbers and interest of course. But we could possibly look at something "in the middle" that the majority can get to. To be decided shall we say .
Are you in ?
Count me in and I can host, our course plays all year round.
1 question though, what tees does it have to be played from?

Yellows for men I guess.....some clubs can be picky about non-members off whites. And ladies can play off their own tees....
Although I guess in the winter we may be off mats at some courses?
