View Full Version : Effects of Weight Training on Putting

Over the past few months as i've been doing weights and pressups etc. to get some muscles for the first time ever (well if its works for Tiger etc....), and i think ii've come across something which may or may not be related in terms of my putting.
I now notice that my Yes Callie-f going back is all over the place.
Then on the weekend there i took out my Betti which is heavier and i didn't seem to have the same issue. I also noted a similar effect when i picked up a Redwood Ping Anser, i had a much smoother stroke.
So would i be right in thinking that as you get stronger you may need a heavier putter? Anyone experience this themselves first hand...or it is just purely down to being crap with the flat stick.?

your certainly not crap with the flatstick mate,
but the extra 5 grams :) of muscle mass (thats gotta be near triple gain on your scrawny frame) could leave you naturaly more tense with the putter,
just a thought ;)

I'm approaching things in a similar fashion to you, except I'm after the John Daly look rather than Tiger......
I can't answer your question, but I can ask another one. Is the club movement erratic when it really matters i.e. going forward?

JD - from what i've seen of him had fantastic touch for a big man :)
As for you question:
Well without the Sam Putt lab i'm not sure what is actually happening.....but i think it is... in that the face angle isn't consistently square or more often the angle of attack is inconsistent at impact due to me taking it back all over the place. And even worse is i sometimes hit it off the toe!!
I wasn't doing this last year!
Maybe i just need to practise my stroke more. OR less...i can't figure out how putting works...the more I do it on the course the worse i seem to get! :)

Ian - you're not doing a lot of pectoral work are you ? I remember some trainer commenting that it's really bad for golf as it tightens up the muscles too much.

Ermm..yes!! :o
chest presses, bench presses and press ups!!
But its not as if i'm bulking up or anything using 8-10 reps rather than 6's. In fact i'm just trying to approach average strength!!

I've been searching the golf instruction videos to see how to use a beer gut more effectively to add power to my drives - all to no avail
The one thing anybody will tell you is that the only thing to learn from me about putting is how not to do it. The only thing that I do know is that confidence is everything, so if you feel better with one putter than the other then you know what one to use.

Big John has stacks of them to choose from. The soon to be next ex-Mrs Daly would be able to get you a better deal on some coke than Mrs Woods. I'd bet a tenner that she would, except she's not offering very good odds:p
I should be careful. She doesn't seem like a woman you'd want to upset.....
