I was up at the range a few hours ago (the lessons can't start too soon) and in the bay next to me was a guy hitting a staff bag full of Benross equipment.

He was striking the ball excellently, but toward the end of his session he asked to see my TM drivers (which weren't getting hit!) as some of the new Benross clubs had weight ports. He felt the protruded and wanted to see how TM had designed them so they didn't drag on takeaway.

The range was called V5 and V6 - not sure which one had the movable weights, but he was very clear that they definitely worked.

So i got chatting to him and guess what, the guy runs Golf Matters!! Gordon Rennie i think he said his name was. (i'll update this if i've got it wrong!) I've been trying to hunt this company down for a few days since i read about them in an old Bunkered Magazine. The have the first and only so far Scottish license for puring shafts. They are based in Glasgow, so i might take a few drivers to him for some work down the line :)

It turns out he was testing clubs for Benross, and all the drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids will be sawn in half tomorrow to check for structural intergrity!!

I didn't ask to hit any of them as i felt that was pointless with my swing. But he had a Mizuno MX500 with Graffaloy NT Shaft in his gamer and the Benross clubs were as long (if not longer) and some had much better flights in his and his friends opinions. This guy was a fantastic striker of the ball, sending the ball well over 230 yards carry in cold conditions.
The Benross's all come with Aldila Shafts, some with NV's and other NVS's, i didn't get a good look at them as it was near closing time. But he did mention he would like to try them with the shaft pured!

He also had a whole range of irons including some very sexy looking wedges.

Not quite spookyfish quality as it was my camera phone, but i know PH plays a Benross so maybe he'll appreciate the pics :)

Yeh the Woods looked good from where i was standing. He was busy taking notes and things so i didn't want to bother him, otherwise i could have given you a much better report.

The weight ports on the driver above protrude and were catching on a low takeaway. More of a problem on the fairways he was telling me. So he will recommend they fix that problem without moving the weights closer together.
As the head shape was similar to the Adams Redline i suggested he take a look at thisOkay i didn't have the URL handy but you know what i mean! (http://www.adamsgolf.com/dr_rpm460d.htm)

I overheard that one of the drivers he was hitting was a 14.5 (i'm guessing with an NV) and the flight was really really good-very penetrating. NB-this guy was one of the best drivers i've seen at the range! But he was telling his friend that they'll call it the Max or something as most laymen are put of by such a high loft in their driver, even though their swing speed and launch conditions dictate that its the ideal set up!

If the prices are anywhere near the V12 etc...i'll be getting one for sure! :)

Are GolfMatters not based in Hillington? I thought that they were started by some ex John Letters people, but I'm maybe getting mixed up. It woould be interesting to see the difference that shaft puring made to a mid-handicapper. (My swing has already been pured - it's pure crap just now)

Why does nobody interesting ever stand next to me at the range?

That's one thing that doesn't quite make sense... If those guys know that people are being put off by high-lofted drivers, why make the club stand out in the first place?

I probably wouldn't go for puring until my driving got a bit more consistent. And its not something i'm working on, so not likely.

Not sure where they are based..and the guy had his wife's car so had no cards to give me.

I know Kane Golf are around there???

But he said their website should be going up soon......I'll add it to directory if and when i see remember.

As for standing next to interesting people.......well i'm usuall that interesting guy sending the 9iron shank across the front of your bay and then creaming a 3 wood off the deck with my next shot :)

the last v10 or v12 had simply 'max' on the base instead of 14 deg

most guys who hit 10.5 dont know what they are missing

Went to the range at lunchtime today (one of those days where you know that you're going to end up hitting something or somebody, so a fivers worth of balls seemed like the sensible option). Forgot it was the school holidays, those places should have health warnings when the "young people" are around - balls bouncing up and down inside the range, and everything landing within 75 yards of the bays being judged suitable for "recycling"- irrespective of the big guy thinning 7 irons in the next bay.

Well I play 10.5* Cobra, but because of the closed face, it plays closer to 12 or 13*, combine this with a stiffer shaft than I'm used to and the dispersion is awesome, very rarely hit miss into the trees, which is certainly helping my game :D

well that's one way of seeing it. I've got a Ben Hogan C-S3 10.5 with which I have no problem getting the ball airborne. In fact it probably balloons a bit too much.
The real problem for me is the shaft length, so I'm tempted to switch to 3 or 3-strong wood with a big head to use as a Driver, especially for the winter months. If anybody can recommend something that fits the above requirements let me know ;)

G5 fairways have a big head, decent shafts too, I'd stick with the Prolaunch though over the NV.
