Posting this just to keep me "informed" via e-mail, since I can't commit to it yet, the 24th of February being a Scottish Cup date.

Depends on result against Livingston (4th February), where the next round draw takes us if successful, and whether that next tie gets shifted for live TV coverage.

Thistle at Firhill and then we'll either both miss it or make it. Wonder who we'll get in the semis.....:p

And depending on medical reports, golf_ghirl's mum may get the all-clear to travel, in which case g_g will disappearing down south that weekend to bring her here. So best to count me out entirely at this point, unless there is a space and I get a last-minute reprieve.

The Tulloch Stadium is one of the smaller grounds in Scotland so chances of a ticket are pretty slim. Add the fact it might be televised with a 1pm kick-off, and there's little chance of me going to Inverness. I can't do anything about golf_ghirl's trip but wait and see if it's called off - if it's on, I can't get a childminder for the length of time needed for a golf outing.

4 times, 12 people = 4 X 3 balls or is my arithmetic wrong? Were 4 balls specified when it was booked?
We need to leave a space for Jim incase he can come.

Kev, you edited your post before I could make a sarcy comment about how good your arithmetic is considering you went to Our Lady's.;)

Ians list for the day out had 16 places, so I think (probably wrongly) this is what Garry was getting at and also why I replied about the cut off date

MisterS3
12-02-2007, 06:25 PM
Okay spoke to Garry today.

Each tee time MUST be a 4 ball in terms of filling up the first 3 tee times at least (correct me if i misunderstood Garry)

So what I (and Garry) propose is that we pay deposit for golf (£5) for 4 tee times i.e 16 slots.
If only 12 turn up we lose £5 per person deposit = £20 - so at worst its no more £2 per person loss. If that's objectionable to anyone i'll cover the loss.

Note food deposit is separate and i'll pay that for people who've paid already and any rolls ups can be added.

I called up Belleisle Golf Club to ask to whom they wanted the cheque made payable to and i was told to definitely not send one.
We are down as Pay on the Day.
FWIW I spoke to a guy called Ricky.

But i'll still assume the deposits totalling £80 will be payable, plus the remainder for those who play. I didn't fancy asking as it gives off the wrong vibes. I'm still confident of a 16 man turnout :)

I also did the same for the Belleisle Hotel and spoke to Wilma and will be sending cheque for the food today. 13 covers so far. Adding on shouldn't be an issue.

Cheers

Got my Season ticket sorted out today. If any of you guys want a game during the week between 9 and 4 this year at any of the courses I can sign on up to nine folk this year at the OAP rate (about 2/3rds of the normal price).

Lohgreen, Darley, Fullerton, Bellisle, Seafield, Dalmilling, Girvan or Maybole.

Can you find out what Ross is for sure, as it makes a diff to draw (see next) And you're off 12 :)

As for draw, i think its fairer if we just sort everyone by handicap low to high and start numbering 1 to 4 - so its a good mix of handicaps in each group.

A warmup, is there a range?

There's a practice range, but you have to use your own balls so if there's a lot of you it may be quite difficult to sort the balls. There's two putting greens, side by side, one's got about 18 holes on it but is on a massive slope and I find it better for putting comps with mates and other things. The other one is better for practicing before a round, because it's pretty flat and the holes are about mid length apart, but there's only about 3 holes on it.

If you need any other info on the course or facilities at Belleisle, don't hesitate to ask...

BTW, if the starter has a beard and is eating prawn cocktail crisps when you go to pay for your round, DO NOT DISTURB HIM!!! He was just about shouting at my dad for disturbing him on a break, when there was no other starter on duty.

I'm not too fussed with the draw.......happy to play with anyone.

I don't think any of the guys in game 2 and game 4 of 'your' draw have played with each other so I can't work your theory.

The draw on the day method has been proven to be a bad idea in the past with bad mixes of handicaps being the usual result.

The draw that has been made was done after debate and discussion and was decided to be done that way as to give a good and fair mix of handicaps and skill levels. The draw theory was made before any names had been put to draw position so it both fair and uncalculated. You obviously don't like the pairing you have been given, so feel free to ask for a swap with someone also in your position as John and Shaun have done.

As long as I don't have to play myself I will gladly go with the flow.

The method Kev has used that was mentioned a while back of the four lowest handicaps going out in the four groups then the next four and so on seems the best way of spliting skill levels.

Guys its no really worth getting all hot and bothered about is it?

Lets remember, the day is about meeting everyone, enjoying a days golf, a bit of banter, a couple of beers and some grub, does it really matter who we play with?

As stated a sensible draw has been made previously (based on a mix of handicaps), but if it doesnt suit everyone, we should draw again on the day, this way we can keep everyone happy. If its gonna come to that, I propose:

The players be split into the 4 respective handicap categories
1)Kevé 6; Robert 8; Ross(S) 8; Chopper 9
2)Stevie 10; Ross(G) 10;Tam 11; Garry 12;
3) Jim 12; HoG 14; Paul 16; Thomas 17;
4) Ian 17; John 18 Shaun 22; Grimlock 22
NB ive just copied them in order from Kevs previous post, no favouritism.

4 bits of paper/card/golf balls etc numbered 1-4 put in a bag and each section draws out in turn (who picks 1st from each section can be determined aplhabetically/shoe size/who can pee the highest etc) if you pull out no 1 you play in 1st match, no 2 the second match and so on through each category.

This should hopefully allow a game of golf to happen, although we may need to have a meeting to see who gets the breakfast rolls 1st or we could stick to how you come out in the draw or.............

And my name is Gareth. I feel daft being refered to as HOG, when everyone else is on first names.

It's threads like this that make me appreaciate the wisdom of giving up organinising the works' golf society, and becoming Junior Convenor at my home course instead. :twitcy:

Seriously, I was going to try to help, based on my previous experience, but there are snags whatever way you do it. Here's some criteria I thought of, and why I dismissed them.

1) Football team supported, and position in league (but Celtic fans would be finished while some of the groups were still stirring their morning coffee)

2) Religion (but the course would grind to a halt the second one of the Muslims put something in the tee box bin ahead of you)

3) Willie size (but might be too cold for meaningful measurement)

4) Father's age (but some of you might not know that)

5) Mental age (but see 3, no meaningful measurement, although that's based on this thread)

Okay - was speaking to Chopper (was his idea) but a really good one i think

WAIT

Its not to do with the draw!! :)

The draw as it is with the four teams with mix of handicaps works because with the even spread of handicaps means that if each player puts a £1 in, we have a team comp...winning team takes all?

That way it should make the day more enjoyable for teams and means everyone is playing till the last hole :)

Ok so we are going for mixed handicaps, but which draw are we choosing, I think there are 2 different ones. We could put 4 lowest, 4 lowmid, 4 midhigh, 4 highest handicaps into separate bags and choose on the day. Can't have any misgivings, as its the luck of the draw. Just a suggestion.

As much as i like the idea above, i'd only be saying that because i've played with Stevie, Kev and Jim before, and would like to play with guys i haven't played with before. I can see their ugly mugs for a game almost anytime :)

The method was decided before we knew the final line up and hence the teams were uncertain to last min. I.e if Ged (5) had signed up instead of GB (12) all the teams would be different.

So to reiterate:

Team 1 Keve-Stevie-Jim-Ian
Team 2 Robert-Ross(G)-Gareth-John
Team 3 Ross(S)-Tam-Paul-Shaun
Team 4 Stephen-Garry-Thomas-Neil.

Yes
MOONGOLFER
WINTER WARMER
I considered calling it the Kevé Trophy as in the Sevé Trophy but as I'd need to lose about 7 stones to look like it so I didn't bother.
I also thought afterwards about getting SMT engraved on the hat as Ian reckons it looks like Jim (Golf_Bhoy)
I was also going to put MG/GM but I don't think we had any takers from over there. I'll go see if I can get a plate put on. As with previous outings we have let guests of members compete as if members so the onus will be on the member of the friend to ensure the trophy is returned for next years event if they win.

(that's in case someone saw the thread on GM where there was a question about the proximity and whether it was open)

16 x bacon rolls and high teas confirmed with Wilma

My plan is to get there for 9.

We usually have a couple of nearest the hole prizes and a longest drive, on GM we used to get the odd really good prize like drivers, utilities etc. Whatever is left will go to as many places as we give out to.

I played in a competition which had a pretty good format. Everybody brought a prize, there as 18 of us playing in it, and we had a prize for each hole, 1-18. Best score wins at the hole and you can only win one hole prize. If there's not enough people, simply don't have a prize at either highest or lowest stroke indexes for the number you have. There are 16 of you playing, so that would either be stroke 1-16 or 3-18.

Now that we have the format done and dusted for this and any future events I was thinking we should maybe do something similar with the prizes to avoid any kind of carve up of prizes like there was at Letham, where both the draw and prize allocation were a bit on the suspect side.

For my tuppence worth here is my suggestion. I personally reckon having loads of place prizes is a waste of time as we would be as well doing a £5 Secret Santa kind of thing. Something along the lines of this maybe.

Individual
1st place trophy and 3 prizes
2nd place 2 prizes
3rd place 1 prize
2 X nearest the pin at a par 3 prizes, 1 front 9 & 1 back 9
2 X longest drive prizes again 1 front 9 & 1 back 9
1 X nearest 2nd shot at a par 4

Team
1 prize each to winning team

A few guys at work have played Belleisle a few times so I'll ask them where best to have the on course prizes. Please note these are suggestions only, don't shoot me. I'll pop in to the trophy shop on Friday and see about 2nd and 3rd place medals.

Kev - you've shelled out enough cash already on the trophy!! No need in my opinion.

I like the ideas - only thing is the number of prizes (15) is less than the number suggested above :)?

The trophy in my opinion is good enough for winning. Could redistribute those 3 prizes to cover the other options.

Other opinions?

I just reckoned there should be a bigger prize for the winner, the trophy goes back.

Forgot to add the sweep money for the team event, £1 each I think it was so £4 to each team member, unless everybody wants to up the anti a bit.

Looked back through this thread, just to remind you all that we are playing lift and place in the first cut.
Balls to be played as they lie in the 1st cut, ie no lift and clean in the semi.(no fingers pointed) unless agreed by all.

2nd - 8 / 10 /14 / 18 "

3rd - 8 / 11 / 16 / 22 "

eh?

You are still playing for an individual score which is off full handicap.

So that's the same at previous events and letham grange.

Now the bit you seem to not be grasping. Addition.

Add the 4 individual scores together = team score.

Highest score wins.

Its only a quid after all.

Does the £5 prize have to be golf related - i won't have much chance to get anything suitable, so it might have to be a bottle of wine or something on those lines.

Shaun - anything you want to bring is fine. Its not really that important!

The team event is fine. Its purpose is to make sure that everyone is encouraged to play to their best for 18th holes, by their teams mates (which would happen anyway) and themselves wanting to post a contributory score.

yes i know there wasn't. I was there.

I was referring to the scoring method (stableford) off full handicaps.

Whether you add them up or not....its still stableford off full handicaps.

You could even add them up Low handicappers, 2nd tier, 3 tier and high handicappers - its not necessary to add up the playing group as a team

But the point of adding up each group was to make the day more fun because every playing together is encouraging each other to make some putts etc.

Reason for discussing it in public is there maybe others coming who feel that the system is unfair etc. So they can add their opinion.

As for the nearest the hole they said the 17th was best and one guy said 14 would be good too, a 5 iron for him but he hits it miles so maybe try and find a shorter one for the other.
