View Full Version : 2007 Spring Open Championship
I'm willing to organise a golf day at the Forest of Arden in March.
The package is unlimited golf, range tokens, coffee & bacon butties and a £10 voucher for the restaurant.
The cost is £48.
The date is Monday 26th March.
The format will likely be a 9 hole pairs warm up in the morning followed by 18 holes on the championship Arden course.
Folk that do not fancy playing 27 holes or need to travel a significant distance can just play the 18 at a cost of £30.
Post here if you're interested.
Note I'm in no mood for debate and so if this is to happen at all I'm going to assume the role of dictator.
For those that are not aware Ballsy has cancelled the 'North v South' at the FofA and likewise I've given up on the idea of a game at Woburn (too many people saying it's too expensive).
This new 'Play' thread is therefore the only one standing.
Come on - it'll be a great day!

Mike,
I have a conference call next Tuesday with the "main" customer that may cause me a problem. After that call I should be able to say one way or the other as to whether I can make it.
If I can attend, I will most likely stay at the Marriott for Sunday night and maybe Monday night (I checked, I have enough Marriott points for the 2 nights  ).
Are others likely to stay Monday night and fancy a game in the area on Tuesday?

Mike, I'm defo in for the whole day. It's only 25 mins in the car for me so I'll be the sado on the range from dawn warming up. Just arrange for my tokens to be ready. I'll also ask a couple of mates but will confirm these by closing date. Appreciate MGers take priority so if you have an upper limit on numbers, let us know and I can drop the other guys. Btw, the price is good and much more in line with the original comp intent. The N v S comp was getting too pricey and complicated.

BTW I meant that on my last visit there whites and yellow markers were side by side. Reds were some way in the distance....
I thought some of the white tees were easier than the yellows. Is it the 3rd or 4th that doglegs right with a pond to the front left ? That one had a wayyy easier white tee than yellow.

Back to the serious stuff.
Important notice re prizes
A couple of MGers are bringing along mates. That's fine of course but they will not be eligibe for the main prizes (naff or not). Instead, for the main singles competition there will be a separate 'guests prize' that only they can compete for.
Whether this acts as encouragement for those guests to register as members here and join the fun I can only speculate. After all, MG is free and easy to join.
I just think it is important to ensure that any 'winners' are part of this MG community (as per requests from companies potentially donating prizes) and more likely available to defend titles at later meetings. Also, there's little fun in someone winning the singles with 48 points and not being around to be called a bandit in perpetuity
Mike
If anyone scores 48 points they will be not be capable of posting on MG

Well good news everybody - I'm not some crazed fantasist and your cheques have been safely deposited with the Forest of Arden. Everything is now booked and I'm delighted to say the event has been extended to 28 golfers and would like to welcome Lefty, Ian, LGL and T1mwatson to the family. Theirs and Boxtaboys are the only payments outstanding.
The details are
7am onwards - I'll be milling about.
8am - Long Weekend Cafe Bar
for coffee, bacon rolls etc. For those seeking bacon alternatives please ask the catering staff. On arrival please find me and I can tick you off the list. I'll also give you your range token and £10 meal voucher.
9.09am - 10.03am - Aylesford Course first tee
7 tees booked @ 9 min intervals
Morning pairs comp to commence. 9 hole comp played over holes 1 to 9. Format to be betterball stableford. Please let Olly (O.M.) know your pairings. Remainder will be mixed up. Order of play will be determined by the distance travelled that morning. You'll be informed of your exact start time (and fourball partners) nearer the time.
c11.30am - 12.30pm - Long Weekend Cafe Bar
An area will be reserved for us in the cafe for those wanting to purchase drinks/snacks etc
12.40pm - 1.40pm - Arden Course first tee
7 tees booked @ 10 min intervals
Afternoon singles comp to commence. 18 hole comp. Format to be standard stableford. Order of play will be determined by handicap with low handicaps out first. Every effort will be made to ensure fourballs are different from the morning session to give everyone as much chance as possible to meet other members. You'll be informed of your exact start time (and fourball partners) nearer the time.
c4.45pm onwards - Long Weekend Cafe Bar
An area will be reserved for us in the cafe for those wanting to purchase drinks/snacks etc. Once everyone is in and settled presentations etc will be made.
Other points:
- The Forest of Arden have asked that individual participants do not contact them directly. If you have any need to liaise with the hotel please do so via myself or Si (Longshot). Note - that does not extend to booking bedrooms etc!
- 'North v South' comp. Mark (Ballsy) is organising this for me. No doubt he'll soon be in touch to confirm what camp you're in etc.
- Slow play will kill the day. Fortunately I'll not let that happen so be warned. A new thread will be started in due course!

- Prizes etc to be confirmed in due course

Maybe send people out based on how far they are travelling back home etc
It's an idea mate, but in theory everyone would need to be about for the handing out of prizes/confirming results etc wouldn't they?
In possible contradiction to my last post(!), within reason, Knotty, Stu and I will be out fairly early in the afternoon so as to be back to get everything in line for announcing results asap after the last golfer hands their card in.

Mike - i like the methodology used in the Scottish Winter Warmer.
And then having a team prize so everyone is playing to the 18th hole.
Will build a bit of team camaraderie (sp?) and maybe get a bit of friendly team rivarly going.
Also means that my 9points might be worth something.
The only problem you have is Longshot is moving through the handicaps faster than our Sunday night curry will our bowels :)

MisterS3
19-02-2007, 04:37 PM
Agreed Ian. The methodology won't be too dissimilar to that in the Scottish shin dig.
Glad you like :) Us Scots are still having good ideas :)
Also, forgot to point out that you won't be going out with your buddy in the afternoon either.
I've got a buddy on MG? Tell me who he is!!
Would rather play with people i haven't met than people i know. Although i'll take what's given to me sir :)
Team idea is good but would it get in the way of the North v South which is planned as well?
That's news to me :) Cool - i'll play in my kilt them  . Damn i could have bought a pair of those Saltire troos from William Hunt if i'd known
You can still do team thing if split in to North Team and South Team of 16 each, and then work 4 teams from each with the same methodology as we've used for saturday. This need not impact on the actual groupings (i'd like to play with southy's too), just the teams for team scoring.
Either way, your hands are plenty capable. I'm just looking forward to it with more excitment than is healthy for a grown man.

Sorry mate, we've a full allocation of 32 golfers for this event (well actually 33 with two guys sharing a morning/afternoon slot).
There's a waiting list in case of drop outs between now and March 23rd. Longshot is coordinating that and the last time I looked there was one or two on it. In truth it's quite unlikely there'd be more than one drop out so your chances are minimal (everyone has already paid up in full).
But you never know, stranger things have happened, so drop Longshot a PM (and be willing to send a cheque on demand!).
Oh and if you don't make it, please look out for details of the Summer Open in due course!
Cheers
Mike

LGL (Kate) as the only female golfer so far entering this event will have her handicap adjusted in light of this rule. Stu has been busy at work on this and I believe Kate won't actually benefit from a single shot in the morning, but will gain an additional point in the afternoon singles as a result. That's purely from memory so I'm sure Stu and Anthony will correct me if I'm wrong.
Yep, Mike has it spot on. Like he said, this isn't any kind of courtesy arrangement or us just being nice, this is the official CONGU line for mixed events.
We've also finalised the decision that the morning pairs tournament will be played off 3/4 handicaps, again as recommended by CONGU.

True Blue, MH and Lowho. I feel I owe you an apology. At least, I probably will. Best to get these things out of the way in advance
Just to let you know that Buggies are currently banned at the Forest of Arden and that situation is unlikely to change between now and March 26th.
Trolleys are currently allowed, though this is constantly under review and any significant rain spells over the next week or so could result in a complete ban.
Should trolleys be allowed on the day, the Forest of Arden hire out pull trolleys at £3 each if required. They do not hire out electric trolleys.
However, there is a relatively limited supply of pull trolleys and with a large corporate group also booked in on March 26th they will be at a premium and allocated on a first come first served basis.
Pull trolleys cannot be reserved/booked in advance.
The number to call for an update is 0870 400 7272 and follow options 3 for "Golf & Leisure" and then 2 for "Golf Shop".
If you do call then please post here afterwards and share the info.
My advice at this stage is to be fully prepared to carry your golf bag just in case - so make sure you have the right straps etc fitted.
Failing that, and you want/hope to use a pull trolley then be advised to bring your own just in case or get to the Pro shop early! (it will be open from 7.30am on the day).

It's difficult to imagine that any course has a trolley ban. I'm just not used to that. The courses at my club are dry and we never have to carry. Think I've only carried twice this year at other courses after particularly heavy rain.

off first??? no pressure then lol, and to all those following..........be prepared for a long morning:tongue:
In no way linked to Paul's comment....
it's time the issue of slow play was dealth with
Overtly slow play will kill the day. If it gets bad then some folk won't get a break between finishing in the morning and having to rush out again in the afternoon whilst others might not get to even finish their singles round at all.
So....
If you can't score - PICK UP
The second you cannot score a point - pick up your ball. It is the responsibility of every player to understand the Stableford scoring system. If you're a playing a Par 4 hole where you don't get a shot and stick your first drive out of bounds and your second drive into rough be aware you are then playing your fourth shot next. If that is a hack back on to the fairway then proceed to your ball knowing that unless that baby goes directly into the hole then you're finished and must scratch that hole. No arsing about on the fairway or putting on the green; pick up your ball, collect your thoughts, park your clubs en route to the next tee and then walk on to the green to tend the flag (if required) for your playing partners.
Sorry but a 10 handicapper hacking around on a Par 4 stroke index 18 hole for a 7 or an 8 is taking the p*ss out of the rest of the field.
Be aware that a high handicapper can score with an 8 on a tough Par 5 so by all means carry on until the last shot.
I reserve the right to penalise any player handing in a card with high, non-scoring numbers on his card.
Lost balls
First ball of the day flies into the rough I personally think you are fully entitled to take your full five minutes looking for the ball and expect your playing partners to lend a hand. However, if it's the fourth or fifth ball of the day gone walkabout then taking a full five minutes and delaying your playing partners isn't really on. Somewhere there has to be a compromise.
Call faster groups through
Smilarly with general slow play and lost ball situations please be aware of the group behind and be prepared to call them through whenever possible.
Morning pairs comp
Is designed as a fun warm up to the main singles event. In no way shape or form should it compromise the afternoon schedule. Betterball pairs stableford should be a quick format - i.e. if your partner is having a good hole and has his/her ball in the hole for a 3 or 4 pointer you don't have to carry on struggling with yours. I am not saying you are obliged to pick up your own ball in this instance, just be aware it's an option and there's no need to take undue time over your remaining shots.
Be aware of the clock. I'm allowing 2 to 2 and a half hours for each fourball. So the first group should be finished for around 11.30 at worst. If it's 10.45 and the first group still has 4 holes left then they'd better step on it! Taking 3 hours for 9 holes is not acceptable and is very selfish on those behind.
Rant over.
If anyone has any opinions on slow play in general or ideas for speeding things up next week please start a new thread.
Cheers
Mike

I'd just add one golden rule to this:
If in doubt, take a provisional!
Hitting a provisional takes an extra 30 seconds, whereas having to walk back to the tee to play again takes a good few minutes.
Personally in Stableford if I can't find my ball then I never walk back to the tee, I'll just take my punishment and walk the hole.

I personally have no problem with slow play (and am well used to it); I'm just thinking of others.

The last thing I want to do is spoil anyone's day and as a very poor driver of the ball myself I'm possibly most at risk from the pick up rule. It's just everyone needs a fair crack at the course hence the hard line over slow play.

Have just been looking back at the most recent posts, after not being able to log on for a couple of weeks (combination of my work ISP suddenly thing Moongolfer was a "Matchmaking" web site  :D and Sinusistus if that is indeed how you spell it, which I have to say I would wish on my worst enemy!) Its all starting to get a little exciting and also looking forward to playing with Longshot, Lowho and True Blue. As for Longshot's comments about being sorry for holding up play, if his recent explots are anything to go by I think I'll be the one holding you all up. :o
Also, to Lowho and True Blue I promise to only talk children with Longshot for a little while. The curse of being a new-ish farther. :rolleyesw:

What do you mean, beating you? Its a singles comp and we have to work together to get the team overall score! Also, having a nine year old doesn't mean the poo is any more pleasant...in fact its probably worse!
Looking forward to it guys...also I will apologise now for my standard of golf and we will hear no more on the day!

Cloud, rain is pretty much the central forecast. Not looking good for trolleys or Hawaiian shirts but we'll be okay!
Also, anyone have any ideas how we can raise money for charity on the day? It's just an idea...........

How do you propose to take advantage of the governments tax laws relating to personal donations to charity?
I'm far from expert...but if i give directly, it would seem the goverment refund my income tax on that portion and give it to the charity too, if i fill in the requisite tick box :)

Steady there Tiger, it was said tongue in cheek that's all. But in reference to your question, if it's an 'extra' donation then it's still positive for the charity even disregarding their inability to claim the tax element.
I just suggested the idea on the offchance someone had a wacky idea or two that's all.

Ah right....I just think its a 'waste' not to claim the tax element back from the govt.

Just how hard is it for someone to see between the lines and post:
"I'd sponsor Longshot a fiver to play the afternoon singles with a bucket on his head!"
I sometimes feel as if I just don't know you lot.......
