I'm going to go official soon, and get an EGU handicap certificate, so the next few suitable games that I play I will be asking for card markers. I can then send off for the official certificate.
I was wondering how many handicap rounds you club guys typically play. So how many rounds during the year should I be looking to use to continue my handicap.
As part of a club I guess your medals/comps are included in handicap adjustments, but is there any other time that you include cards for cuts/increases. Not being part of club is going to be an issue for me deciding when to get official card marking done.
Any suggestions on a suitable strategy for this?
Cheers

My plan is play the monthly medal, I can't commit to anything more than that.
My casual play is usually only 9 holes so can't hand them in anyway.

A lot of clubs require you to play 3 medal rounds a year so that you can enter competitions in the next year although the Gogs has just dropped that rule.
So the answer is you can put cards in when you like providing they are signed by a member although the committee will ignore card higher than your handicap and generally only reduce your handicap after about three such cards.

speaking of getting cards signed by a member, because you're not ''attached'' to a course have you checked what the terms and conditions are for EGU to validate your score?
Does it have to be signed by a member at the course where you play or just another EGU member?

Sam, Here is the quote from the website
Submit three completed scorecards played over 18 holes and played on course afffiliated to the home unions, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The cards must be signed by yourself and your playing partner and sent to the Associate Membership Department, The English Golf Union

BT - I marked and signed the cards for my pal when he joined the EGU scheme recently. I just signed, wrote my name and current EGU handicap on them in the markers sig area, and they were happy with them. So I think as long as the marker is an EGU member (via club or the scheme) then it will be ok.

That's what I was getting at. I seemed to remember the marker also had to be affiliated to EGU, one way or another

Either way I'll probably have all mine signed by a handicapped player anyway.

I asked them over the phone - it does need to be signed by a club member or EGU associate member.
