View Full Version : Anyone using graphite shafts in their irons?

I started with graphite irons, and loved them. Then switched a couple of years ago to steel, mainly for the improved shot dispertion.
But never been totally happy with them, and keep picking up people's graphite shafted irons at the range and hitting them, and loving the things.
I have the TM shafts in my irons which are lighter weight than DG but even so always feel heavy to me, sorta like the club is swinging me, not me swinging the club.
Just wondered if you have any experiences.

I think a heavier club helps me with my tempo, its difficult to swing fast and with precision with a heavy club so it slows the speed down.

Interesting thought. I used to have some heavy clubs but changed to the original Ping Eye 2 clubs when I lived in the US. They were much lighter and I found I had no control to start with. It taught me to slow my swing/tempo and as such my handicap went from 24 to 14 in a year.

I have recently started using s300 mp60's but cliche has nippon ns950's (i think - they are lighter anyway) in his 60's and i prefer the lighter club as i feel i'm swinging the club and not vice versa.
I've not had extensive testing between the clubs, but shots i have hit with cliche's have gone further - possibly due to higher swing speed because of lighter club.
So if using graphite shafts in irons could give me a lighter club with the same feeling i'd be happy to use them.
I do have a big bertha with a graphite shaft but its too whippy to draw any conclusions.

I've got x2 blues with graphite shafts, feels like there's nothing there when I get a good contact. I recently started getting too much distance on my PW (45'), and got a steel shafted Vokey 50' for approach shots - can't say I prefer either one per se, but perhaps I like the graphite for a full swing and the steel for pitch shots.

i like my s300's but am tempted by project x.
i wouldn't fancy short irons with graphite in them, maybe 2-6 or something like that.

I used to have to have a set of Srixon XXIOs with stiff graphite shafts.
Loved them when I was playing several times a week, but once I had to cut down to w-e games only with no chance of practising during the week I flogged them on ebay and got a set of MX20's with regular steel shafts. No regrets there, the Srixons were too difficult for me to use consistently

Just noticed this thread
I recently put a set of stiff UST RV2 75 Gold Graphite shafts http://www.ustgolfshaft.com/USTWeb/Product/productfamilydetail.aspx?id=9 in my irons as i was curious to find out what they played like.
I had 4 evenings of range play with them and 2 rounds of golf.
I wanted to try something a little different from Dynamic Gold and Rifle shafts ( the 2 shafts i am most familiar with ). I found that the ball flight was excellent, somewhere in between the low flight of the DG`s and the higher flight of the Rifles. I simply loved these shafts when hitting from the mats at the range and couldn`t wait to try them " for real ", i seemed to be more accurate and consistent than with my normal S400`s but was losing about a club in distance.
On the course was a complete nightmare:eek: I just found them to be too light and i was never comfortable with an iron in my hands, my tempo was miles out and i never felt in control of the clubhead. I pulled the shafts after these 2 rounds ( maybe i should have given them more time ) and fitted my current shafts ( which i think are fantastic b.t.w :) )
With hindsight, i should have tried the UST RV2 115 shafts as these would appear to be more suited to my fast swing and they are not too far off the weight of a steel shaft. I may try a set of these in the future if i have a falling out with my current set-up;)

Lots of women do. :D
Am I banned? :)

Well, get me some knickers then 'cos I do!
*prepares for fisticuffs* :p
I use graphite shafts for no reason other than they felt great in the shop when I picked them up. Can't say I notice any performance issues given I only ever had a cheapo starter set before that

Grahite shafted irons are nice and light - I think this helps to encourage less tension in your grip and swing, which is a big issue for us newbies.
