I know the forum is doing well but do we really need this many different sections?

I agree.

Already threads are being moved.

Why not use subforums. So the "Play" section can go inside the "Golf Courses and Clubs" section. The "Introductions" can be inside the "General". "Bargains" could be under the "Trader" section etc etc.

Vbulletin shows the subs sections quite well so it shouldn't make it hard to fnd them.

I like the idea of sub-fora, however, you may run the risk of people not finding the appropriate one to use - see the threads on GM re the "for sale" forum. Careful naming should get round this problem :)

The problem with too many forums is that users dont read the titles and end up sticking everything in General, then it gets moved by a mod, then the original poster cant find it.
IMO GM have it about right.

You can show the subforums in the main view like this below ....

I suggest we leave as is for now, and unused forums can wither on the vine and get pruned eventually.

I suppose the question is : is it better to start with too many or too few?

I simply prefer less sections per page, and the only way to acheiving that is to use subforums :o

Its your choice but I prefer too few.
Consolidating some of them and THEN splitting them if required seems a better user method.
I know its all new, but having spent a few hours on here already, I am still having to scan up and down and wondering which section to post in. and if I am doing that you can be sure newcomers wont bother, they'll just chuck their posts into general.

Just had a quick play with the current forum names and the use of subforums. This is the sort of the strategy I would adopt. Of course you guys own the site so feel free to do your own versions, or dismiss it completely :)

General (General discussion about non-specific golf stuff)

Introductions (Say hello and tell us who you are)

Trading Post / Bargains (Buy/Sell or just link to good bargains)

Golf Technique and Tips (Discuss your game )

Rules and Regulations ( Discussion of The Rules of Golf)
The Ladies' Tee ( Ladies only! )
The Pro Circuit ( Talk about Tiger )
Kit ( Discussion of equipment )

Golf Courses and Clubs (Discuss your favourite golf courses.)

Play (Organise a game and get out there)

Off Topic (Anything not about golf)

The Ball Bag ( Humour )

Admin and Feedback (Feedback, and suggestions)

I quite like BT's breakdown actually. And Creosote is right IMO, having only a few forums gets everything up and running and friendly then we can move things around and expand it as others join in.

I like the idea of sub-sections but i can't think of a good way of doing it.

And to point out how hard it is (not to denegrate BT's example specifically) as example from above, i don't see the 'the ladies tee', 'the pro game', 'kit', or 'rules..' as subsection of 'technique and tips'. I'd see ALL of them as subsection of something else. :)

But basically anything that minimises the need to move threads is good with me :)

Personally i use 'today's posts' under quicklinks 99% of time so the actual forum section something is in, doesn't stop me reading threads.

I like this. Thanks BT :)

I'm inclined to do this right away ... but first ... we should use the facility of a poll. So I'll start a new thread with a poll in Admin and Feedback. Let's leave it up for a few days to get a decent response.

Cheers

I like this. Thanks BT :) No problem, feel free to modify the names etc as you see fit, just thought it might add something to the discussion to see it in the 'flesh'.
