I took a video earlier this year of mate warming up for a round of golf in the nets and one of the stills from the camera phone video was this

So couple of quiz questions

1) Can anyone name the course?

2) Its a stiff shaft - but what shaft (note his club pro fitted him for it)

3) But most intriguingly - why is it bending like that?

The club he is using is his 3 wood.
He doesn't carry his driver - i think from seeing his 3 wood trajectory the driver would go into the ground.
He plays at Elie which is a windy links course, so maybe this is a developed technique (he doesn't know himself) and his hc is a solid 12.
He's never had a lesson and been playing 25 odd years. He does do a little dance which bring his feet to a open position at impact.
He's not a big hitter - about the same as me.

1) Not a clue

2) UST Proforce 65 Gold?

3) Something to do with the fact the club is going too fast for the shutter to capture it, I think. I've seen it done loads of times before.

Bang on - I've seen similar photos and it's been discussed before.

Correct :)

Really? But he hits a very very low ball? So i had assumed the still from the vid was "correct" and not an illusion! But i'm happy to be corrected! :) And i'm sure he'll be happy to know he hasn't got shaft issues! :)

Honestly it is a photography issue. I've seen discussion between very techy photo gurus about it that [apparently] made it all become clear.

Ooh, I got the shaft right too!

Ian, your mate lookes like he is launching the ball very high on that photo?

Okay i'll let my mate know :D He's probably spent the past 6 months trying to sort out his swing ! :D (not really he never practises!)

I guess its to do with the time it take to register the image on the CCD chip?? But i'd be happy to read all the techy stuff if someone can point me in the right direction :)

That's as high as the ball ever gets :D

Surely any issue with speed of photo would result in a blurred image of the shaft, rather than what is a sharp photo of everything but the head and ball?

I must need a techy explanation....

I must need a techy explanation....Your correct, if the camera was a normally film camera with a shutter, but a digital camera is different and captures the image one line at a time, hence each line can be very well defined and thats why you can see the shaft bent like that.

That's the photo I've seen to - the one that lead to the techy discussion I can't find :)

This might be true for camera phones and camcorders which dont have shutters and the processing element of the device has to read each individual line of pixels in realtime.

You will not get this effect with true digital still cameras (either fixed lens or interchangeable DSLR's) which actually do have shutters.

Who says the camera never lies?

So in the original photo, the CCD output was scanned upwards, and in the second it was scanned downwards?

Seems to me like some sloppy design work:)
