View Full Version : Playing in muddy conditions
Played yesterday and all round game was in fine order except I struggled with my pitch shots in the 10 - 50 yard range. I normally find them a doddle in the summer and am really confident. I either attack into the back of the ball to get a high flight and stop or kind of 'sail' the ball with a few bounces with a more gentle angled downswing.
But in the mucky conditions of yesterday my bottle went immediately. I hit 'thick' shots maybe 80% of the time and for the others hit them 'thin' and flew the green. :frown:
Any tips for chipping in mucky conditions?
Cheers

for me i swap the 60 deg wedge for a 55 deg sand wedge.......the 60 has nowhere near enough bounce for these conditions and i get fat shots, for me its cos i cant squeeze the ball due to there not being enough resistance from the ground directly under the ball.........using a sw with a decent amount of bounce helps tho
Using a sand wedge sounds an idea.....
What about technique? Should anything change?

only in that i cant use my favoured pinch shot......i tend to try lifting of the ground rather than trapping it against it ;)

How muddy was it? When it's just damper than summer a higher bounce wedge will help.

We're not talking "sinking" here but muddy enough to say the least.
Anyone else have any bright ideas? I have difficulty in judging the strength of these shots.

Frank - try and keep your hands ahead of the clubhead through impact, and still hit with a descending blow. The ball doesnt know its muddy but you do!

if you keep fating it then try picking your head up a little at address. this should raise your shoulders slightly. also use a club with less loft and hit an aggresive pitch shot. if you slow down into the ball you will mess up.

Hi Frank, Played a round today at Marland near Rochdale. Exactly the same problem. Hitting fat most of the time. I'm not that good at best but when you fat twice on a pitch and overall lose about 20 shots due to conditions it does madden you. Drives were OK long irons a bit dodgy but pitching? SAY NO MORE.
Great game though and enjoyed the course. One problem, non of the tee's were marked and it was a hell of a job finding your way around.
Cheers, Keith.

I have found that playing the ball slightly further forward in my stance, and widening my stance slightly, still allows me to attck down on the ball, but at the same time giving me a larger swing arc. My divots are nowhere near as deep, I just have to make sure I keep accelerating through the ball. It's helped me anyway.
Acceleration's what you need. If you want to be a recooooooord breakerrrrrr yeah :)
