View Full Version : Waterproofs - what have you got?

I have two waterproof tops
Gavin Green and Sunderland GT Tour. Both are gore-tex (wouldn't buy anything else as i'm a sweaty so and so!) zipless/over-the-head config. I have had zip jackets but they are not for me.
The galvin green is shorter and lighter and more suited to the summer/warmer weather. Both work really well. Would buy again.
I also have Dunhill Gore-Tex waterproof trousers but have put a small tear in them from climbing a fence at monifieth to retrieve a ball (found a gate on my way out!) so will need to replace them. Would buy again, but can't find them.
What do you have waterproof-wise?
Are they any good . i.e would you buy them again?

Why do you say the Galvin Green jacket is more a summer jacket? Is it the paclite version?
Reason for asking is that I am just about to invest is new waterproofs after discovering yesterday that my current ones are more like sponges :(
I like the Galvin Green Angus jacket and was thinking that it would not only keep me dry but also warm in the winter months.

XXXL - I'm not sure what GG jacket i have, but its not paclite. It is probably an Angus.
But you have to remember its a fair bit colder up here :) and because the Sunderand GT Tour is heavier and warmer its better suited to the winter months that are coming.
I'd rather wear the GG because its easier to swing in but when its cold, as layers are not ideal for the golf swing, the Sunderland wins.

I have Go waterproofs. I got large to go over my many layers in the depths of winter, but consequently found this to be too large.
They are indeed waterproof, so I'll end up untainted by raindrop...but drenched in my own sweat. I'll probably get one of those short sleeved ones next time to airate my upper body.

I have Galvin Green Gore-Tex jacket and trousers. I wear the trousers through out winter raining or not. Don't see the point in putting on a freshly washed/ pressed pair of trousers to get them dirty, wet around the bottoms within a couple of holes. I just throw the trousers when required in the washing machine every few rounds no detergent, short cycle good as new. I find the jacket really comfortable and warm and I also wear this a lot through winter wet or not as I do not feel that it hampers my swing. If its really cold I wear another Galvin Green insula top underneath which is great not bulky at all very comfortable. Galvin Green also do a great beanie hat which is thin but extremely warm, on one occasion last year forgot it wore a traditional wool hat and noticed big difference in how much colder my head felt. Can't recommend highly enough. Galvin Green suit one of the best golf purchases I've ever made.

At the moment I just get wet and/or cold. :( I use an umbrella when it's wet and wear a windshirt, which is OK in showers.
I am currently looking for a decent waterproof suit which doesn't cost the earth. I was thinking:

PP,
I realise the cost is significantly different, but I was very surprised today when I rang the folks at http://www.snaintongolf.co.uk/ to ask about availability of certain sizes of Galvin Green waterproofs. Once we established I could get the sizes I needed, I was quoted the following prices:
Jacket £169 - website price £189
Trousers £111 - website price £149
So, I would suggest ringing the folks as I was more than happy that I ended up saving nearly £60 !! :D :D
I've recently bought a galvin Green Arden Jacket and it's by far the best weatherproof I've had. The problem I've had with other manufaturers is that I find the shoulders have a tendancy of letting the water in if I'm carying. I carried 4 weeks ago when a comp i was playing was abandoned due to the rain and after 16 holes was still dry.
In the past I felt that you could get away with a cheeper (non gore-tex) pair of bottoms but I've noticed that with driving rain, they would eventually start to leak.
I'm currently trying to justify the need to spend £150 on a pair of Galvin Green bottoms, (Not only to the Mrs, but to myself) I'm not someone that has to have matching top/bottoms so any recomendations of alternative Gore-tex weather proof bottoms that will not break the bank would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Eddo.
Galvin Green bottoms for £111 now that is tempting...Was that a special deal because you bought the top as well ?

I do not think so, even though I did enquire as to the price AFTER I had sorted the jacket. The cheapest I had found before this quote was at http://www.edinburghgolfcentre.co.uk/ where they were £129.95
I'm using Proquip Neptune waterproofs, i've had them about 2 years and they are still lovely and waterproof, and still look as good as the day i brought them.

I have a Galvin Green jacket and the trousers to match. The trousers are very light and have a good waterproof zip down the side. the jacket can be worn for other activities aswell. They do cost a few quid but well worth it
2 Foot Joy jackets - (1 zip off sleeves), 1 Sunderland GT Tour (YELLOW!), 2 Kartel windproof tops....
Only wear the GT tour top now. (A bit warm in the summer months, but perfect for Winter, and it helps to find me in the dark...

Don't have a set of waterproofs-hate them. -Just hide under umbrella-play shot-and then get back under. Wear a baseball cap to keep head dry.
Hate waterproofs so hopefully the new ProQuip Silk Touch will prove bearable, should be arriving today.

I've got two old (ten years or so) sets of Sunderland waterproofs....I've not found anything quite as comfortable in modern gear...will wear them this winter and probably invest in a new set next year.
Just bought a ProQuip Silk Touch short sleeve wind/rainshirt which is very comfortable and lightweight.
My final barrier against rain is my own skin...thats nigh on waterproof...maybe it would all be easier if we just played naked when it rained?

Usually hate waterproofs as they are usually too small in places or to baggy in other places. Heard about William Black from a client of mine who highly recommended them. Ordered and received them a few weeks go and was impressed. They are made-to-measure so they fit prefectly in all places. Paid £225 for the suit which is also guaranteed for 3 years. Just hope the middle age spread does not spread much more otherwise I will have to go back for another.:)

I just bought a Sunderland Gore-Tex Paclite suit from ebay for £130. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but am impressed by the fit and the lightness, very easy to swing in. I also have a short sleeve Nike storm-fit jacket which I've found works very well in Summer showers without me getting too warm.
Has anyone tried those waterproof gloves that are meant to improve your grip in the rain?
MisterS3
18-10-2006, 12:14 PM
Having played with chopper i'm going to get galvin trousers. Reason for this is that you can walk around the rough and not have to wash a pair of trousers for every round.
For a lazy person like me...that's gold :)
My only problem is...they all pretty much look the same :)

Yes. I have the Footjoy pair. Absolutely marvellous. Was extremely skeptical until I used them. Don't laugh, but they have to be wet to work, wetter the better (she screamed :D ). There are some tight-wads that will use Marigolds which are apparently just as good.

Marigolds come in a variety of colours. I was going to say the standard pink is rather a no-no but when I see what the Pros are wearing nowadays should go rather well with the rest of the outfit!! :D

No point in starting a new thread so I'll resurrect this one:
Diaplex? Anyone heard of it? According to Google the only thing in the world made from Diaplex are Callaways rain proof pants which makes me a little sceptical.
Mine are a bit shoddy looking after shortened them rather inconsistently with a pair of scissors.

They can't be the only thing surely? This is what Diaplex's website says:
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announces the development of a whole new generation of "smart fabric" technology for the outerwear industry.
Taking aerospace technology and applying it to clothing may seem a far stretch but for the corporation that updated the Mars Rover, and develops giant airplane turbines and refrigerator "crisper" drawers, creating the future is a natural step.
Molecular design research led to the creation of the "shape memory polymer", a microscopic molecular structure that offers astounding new properties and performance for a whole variety of products.
This incredibly flexible, futuristic product changes its properties to meet the user's immediate needs. From flexi-grip spoons for arthritic hands, rigid intravenous tubing which softens internally to eliminate discomfort for hospital patients, to parka's that keep the skiers warm during rest but completely cool and dry during activity, DiAPLEX truly does it all!
DiAPLEX is the ultimate answer to the unique needs of apparel for the active outdoor sports. A shape memory polymer laminate attached to a variety of fashionable, yet functional fabrics, DiAPLEX adapts to whatever conditions it encounters, from a raging blizzard in Nepal to a sudden shower in Maui.
A major breakthrough, heads above the competition, DiAPLEX is simultaneously and completely waterproof, windproof, and breathable.

Zip off legs? I have to say they are the worst looking pair af overtross I've ever seen! (Not that I've seen a good looking pair I might add). Get some ProQuip ones like me, they have a zip at the bottom, if you unzip it they turn into flares! :spinny:

I've got a Pro-Quip Ultimate Goretex Suit.
I also have a Footjoy Suit that I bought from Greaves in Glasgowlast Xmas, it's a great suit but not on the same level as any Goretex gear.
I've got a Sunderland Paclite Goretex top that's XXXL it's great but I ended up buying the Proquip stuff above as I couldn't find the matching trousers. It's for sale and is minted.......

Another vote for ProQuip, I have the Neptune II top and trousers. The top is 3/4 zip over the head job and detachable arms. The trousers are fantastic and even come in short arse size 27" inside leg! Comfortable and warm. Have to say they've had more use taking the dog out for a walk than on the golf course.

I have a sunderland goretex top, cant remember its name but its the newer version of the GT Tour - very comfortable and very waterproof
Also have a SunIce Hurricane Goretex top and trousers. This is far better than my Sunderland suit. Lots lighter but still very warm
In our shop Sunice out sells Sunderland about 3:1. Much better colours than the boring Sunderland ones aswell

I have Footjoy sleeveless for summer which is excellent and have the Benross suit for winter. I think the trousers are ok but on Sunday when I came off the course my top was soaking. I am not sure if the jacket was leaking or if the gear I was wearing underneath was making me sweat. Will probably give it another go and if I get wet will probably look at something else

All you need to wear under a GG paclite is a mizuno breath top under normally cold conditions and you'll be fine, watch that sizing tho if your buying off e bay,I had to go two sizes up into xxxl and I'm not a f.t b*****8.
I don't need to wear anything under the bottoms either, warm and dry as toast, why buy a cheaper set of something else in a sale and feel it leak?.:eekw:

I got the Nike Storm-Fit suit at them moment, and they are really good in my opinion
Very thin, but waterproof at the same time & zip pockets :D
The only waterproof I own is a Ralph Lauren over the head number that's nice and loose and of course very light. It's not a 'golf jacket' of course - just something that happened to be in my wardrobe and I tried it out.
Never in a million years would I wear waterproof trousers. I've been out in all sorts of weather and never once have I felt the odd bit of wet on my standard golf pants to be a problem. Surely it'd be like playing in nappies?
