The idea behind this thread is that we all have expertise in various areas and may care to share it with fellow MG members.
eg. i've been emailed by a few members of GM re: care of their parents/grandparents etc.

Anyway post what areas of expertise workwise or other you have here.

Please note: If you have any questions either PM the person or start another thread.

I currently run a care home for the elderly. It caters for both Frail Elderly and EMI residents.

Previously @ Barclays Capital
Windows NT Engineer: Both support and delopment of Standard Platform for NT Servers and SQL Server worldwide.
VB/VC++ programmer: Not my forte, but could debug and fix quite well
WSH: Rewrote Barclays Group most important batch (Liquidity report to Bank of England) from shellscript which would crash everynight. One of my proudest legacies as its still in action 5 years on.
Excel (VBA): Worked for European Government Bond Desk providing them with realtime tools on an adhoc basis to compliment trading systems.
European Govt Bond Trader: Worked the 10year high risk sector and paid back all my wages and quite a bit more before i left to spend a year travelling.

Jack of all trades - master of non :)

I'm a master mariner and don't really know much else (not that I know much about anything) looking for a job a where I can put my feet up and get more golf time.
I worked in an office a few years and noticed how much time the golfers got out of the office, but didn't take up the game until after I went to working at sea but have so far only managed one day off for golf in four years.

I'm "currently" the MD of a small company in the telecoms industry. The plus side of this since I took up golf is thta I have to meet customers (often on the golf course) and I have to meet suppliers (often on the golf course).

My real background is in Electronics engineering and I've done all sorts of product development work including hardware, firmware and software. I've also done sales work in the telecoms industry and managed marketing departments.

Ideally I'd have been a centre half for Partick Thistle and spent my Saturday afternoons happilly kicking people (although today it would have been the other Thistle players). Unfortunately I was crap and slow.

Gogs Guy, sounds like you and I do a very similar job. My area though is application development environments for high availability systems like the ones used by most airlines and certain financial institutes. The "problem" with my job is that it has worldwide responsibility, gets "interesting" when you try to work in a non english speaking part of the world :)

I moved into trading from IT.
Witnessed 9/11 from a trading floor with all the screens they have. We were also on the phones to Cantors/Garban etc. at the time. Something that's very viceral still
Realised soon after a) there was more to live than 14hours a day at a desk as much as i liked work b) that i was 28 and starting all over again and it would be another 5 years before i could say i was established. I felt that life would have passed me by and i always wanted to travel, so i took a year out and did that :)

Barcap is going through its annual restructuring (not sure what they are doing but i think its consolidation this time) and there is a lot of project work going on. Most of my mates now work on projects teams. However you probably have to go in on the production side, prove yourself and then get moved across. Its only if you know somebody or somebody can vouch for your work first hand will you get hired in directly to a project team. Or at least that was the way it was back in the day.
Still whatever happens at Barcap you know that they'll continue to spend an absolute fortune on IT equipment to keep all the engineers happy :)
As a graduate on engineering team i had about £500k worth of kit in my test lab for developing the SQL Server build. I think it was mirrored sytem, mirrored logs plus 2 hot swap in one disk unit and raid 5 data plus 1 hot swap in another unit. That was big db config. Small config only had one disk unit. It was then rolled out to over 300 servers!! 300 separate servers for databases!! And that was when i left the team to try my hand at developer :)
So i can fully understand the need to consolidate. Although from what i hear they now have 3 live datacentres - they only had 1 when i was there, so things may have spiralled a bit! :)

Well it's still the basic reason that 'business continuity' is a major sap on funding; everyone wants storage area networking across countries regardless of the price, only now they are starting to realise the complications of running massively transactional databases and wanting lossless failover and zero downtime as you 'switch' from London to Mumbai. "But what happens to inflight transactions..." I hear them cry...let them cry I say ;)

I am a medical doctor by trade, mainly surgical. Recently I have succumbed to the dark side and have just entered into the GP training scheme, so that I can play golf more often & work towards owning my own golf course one sweet day. Currently working in Elderly medicine as I rotate through the hospital paying penance for daring to be a GP.

When not working I can usually be found on a golf course, hacking up whatever is in the way of my ball.

Computers are my hobby and have built many custom spec systems from home PCs to RAID servers for business networks. I also enjoy creating cms websites and getting them into the top 5 google search lists.

Shaun Womersley - 2nd row - prop and winger on occasion.
Dewsbury when we had a good side lol
Claim to fame lol won open rugby mag 2nd row top player with m hawksworth from keighley
Quite a while ago now
We managed to get into the first division as was then
They brought in some new players to supposedly strengthen an already winning team, so we went back down again. it destroyed the team spirit.
Only player i hit in a tackle who stayed upright was mr ONeil form your team
He couldnt get me down , nor i him - ended up waiting for the ref to shout held laughing at each other. ha ha

But the good news is that it pays the mortgage, for golf clubs, constant upgrades to my car that I track regularly, and also for plenty of mountain bike bits and pieces. Oh and not to mention the fishing tackle as well.....

My wife was really pleased when I took up another hobby (e.g. golf) that meant more time out and more things to buy!!! ;)

As a marketer you can imagine how difficult it is for me not to be lured in by all the big manufacturers shiny equipment whenever I go into a pro shop!!??

I am a hospital pharmacist working in an NHS hospital.

My official title is "Specialist Pharmacist for Acute and Emergency Care". I work mostly in Accident & Emergency doing a variety of things including taking medication histories from the patients, checking that the doctors prescribe everything correctly and that any new drugs they start don't interact with the patients current medication. I provide advice to the doc's on prescribing and to the nurses on adminstration, supply medicines where needed and counsel patients on how to use stuff like inhalers. There's a bit more to it but that's the gist.

It's busy and can be quite stressful but I enjoy it.

If anyone wants advice regarding medication i'm happy to help.

What's wrong with 6th Form Mike? You must give yourself chance to get used to it, so many people drop out early without giving it a decent go.

The other thing I'd say is if you're going to do the AS year, you may as well go on and do the final A levels. A2s are worth more than ASs (obviously), and when it comes down to it, it's only a year out of the rest of your life, so it's worth doing.

Then perhaps you can think on the job front, but if your grades are good enough, go to Uni. I was against it for years but one day you wake up and smell the coffee.
