does your club allow them to be used in competive play?

i am currently trying to get the commitee to pass a local rule that would allow this.

thanks

My old club - No, they wouldn't even entertain the idea.
My New club - hopefully but I'll not know till I get in next year.

My club does.
I asked a few years back and they refused saying "how will they get the GPS things in the flags" idiots had said no when they didn't actually know anything about them.
I requested Sky golf to map the course and the pro got a couple of GPS in for demo.
They were approved as soon as the comittee got to try them out.

Edit,,, that is with GPS but it's the same rule that governs the use as lasers.

Yes, and I know of very few in my local area (Herts/Bucks/Berks/Oxon) that don't. Nearly every club I know has now allowed them.

thanks for the replies so far its interesting that by the sounds of things many courses allow them.

just trying to word the letter in a way that it is more likely that the commitee will approve the idea. when thinking about it it is hard to think of a reason they would not create a local rule to accomodate this.

on the other hand our golf club seems to turning into more of a social club than a competitve golf club more and more each year!

oh well its worth a go!

When you word your letter why dont you include the suggested local rule wording as indicated on the R&A website?

This will at least remove one task from your committee that they may feel is an onerous obstacle to them doing it. The mere fact that appropriate wording exists allready may make them more amenable to implementing a local rule.

could you provide a link to the section of the r and a website you refer to as it would be helpful.

thanks

you are looking for appendix 1 (Local Rules, conditions of the Competition) Rule 9.

specifically the suggested wording is...

“(Specify as appropriate, e.g. In this competition, or For all play at this
course, etc.), a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses
a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g. gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.”

I've seen a fair few people with them on their bags, and some flyers in the shop, plus we are mapped by SkyCaddie and Garmin, so going by that I'll say we can use them.

Our club allows them, after all it is no different to a strokesaver. I played an Open this year and mapped a course with my skycaddie prior to the Competition and then drew up the holes in a notebook.
Really good for finding out how far you hit your irons
