I've just come back from a day's golf @ the highly rated links course Aberdovey which is on the Mid-Wales coast.
I travelled by Train, which is ideal because the Station Platform is on one side of the rails and the Clubhouse is on the other!
Borth down the coast is only a ten-minute walk from the Station at Borth.
Any other courses that are easy to get to from a Railway Station?

Hillside and Royal Birkdale are both within spitting distance of Hillside station.

And I guess you spit at both of them as you wander onto S&A!
Golf and Railways were pretty intertwined early on - it was the only convenient mode of transport to them for most for a start! Gleneagles (the Hotel at least) was actually owned by one (Great Northern I believe) and plenty have stations conveniently placed - e.g. Carnoustie. An old posters advertising Camberley Heath and Walton Heath specify where the course is from stations.
Apparently, the owner of Beaconsfield made a deal allowing the railway through his land, provided they created a 'halt' at the Golf Club!

I think West Lancs golf course is only a few mins walk from Hall Road Rail Station and formby golf course is next to freshfield station on the Liverpool northern line, the same as Hillside Station.
wallasey golf course, is not far from Wallasey Grove Road Rail Station and Royal Liverpool is not far from Hoylake Trainstation

I've played there, my first taste of links golf and it was brilliant! I think it's the oldest course in Wales, although I may have imagined that. Only defences are the weather and the sea, I shot 87 round there and I was a total hack at the time (some may ask if anythings changed :p). MY only bad memory of the place is one I'm never allowed to forget. My dad, who hit's his driver nowhere and fairway woods backwards, knocked a 3 hybrid past my drive on one hole.
I have to confess though, we drove, sorry.

Yes the second hole is very memorable!
Beach to the left and main road to the right! Played there one day and managed to take a box of Tarmac-seeking golf balls!
Sliced it going out and hooked it coming back!
Played West Lancs a few weeks ago and forgot about the Railway Station there!
Mind you you're spoilt up on Merseyside with your railway system. Beecham obviously never got up there!
