View Full Version : Lloyd Saltman - the new Gordon Sherry

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I'm starting to get a bad feeling about Scotland's "next big thing", Lloyd Saltman. You might remember he burst to prominence with a top 25 finish in the 2005 Open.
I read recently that his world amateur ranking has plummeted to 50 something, when I'm sure he was just about number 1 in 2005. His poor form was reflected in Scotland's decision not to select him for the recent Eisenhower Trophy.
Now he has failed to make it to Euro Tour School final stage, after leading the field on day 1 with a 65.
Hopefully, this is just a blip, but I'm starting to think- "Gordon Sherry" ??

No, he's only 4th in the Scottish Amateur rankings (a mirror of the world rankings). No.1 Scot is Richie Ramsay - who is also world No.1:)

I played his home course (Craigielaw) on Sunday. Oh yes and I saw John Collins in the car park; he'd been looking at a house next to the course.
Doesn't add to the discussion, just a bit of casual name dropping.

Went there for a quick look about when I played Muirfield in February. Clubhouse is beautiful, course looks great, I plan to go up there again (maybe in the New Year) and play it.
Doesn't really answer your question very well does it!!

Tough greens - i was told they are similar to Archerfield where i've played.
I've been to Craigielaw but not played...saw both Saltman brothers hanging round the clubhouse. They were sitting with the juniors outside the shop on the sofas which kinda looked a bit funny considering Lloyd has his tour bag in the window of the shop! :D
I see Richie Ramsay has turned pro and finished 52 this week in Russia.
He won 3 or 4 events in a row earlier this year, so he's getting the back on track to say the least. Definitely a Walker Cup spot for him

Ha, I'd forgotten I'd started this thread! Looks like I was well wrong, he's had a great year on the amateur circuit. Fingers crossed for a similar pro career.

For the benefit of G_B I can confirm that JC bought a house next to the course. ;)
Foxholer plays there too eh? Hmmm.
Good to see two Craigielaw boys go head to head in the last eight of the Scottish Amateur. Shame one had to lose.

That brought a good laugh, probably one of the funniest films ever. Watched it the week before we went to Tunisia but never got to see where it was filmed.

I have played Craigielaw numerous occasions, as one of my fathers laws buddies is a member there. Great course - long and tough if the wind is blowing. A course that you can play all year round as well. All the houses around the course cost around £1mill plus, know a couple of people that live there through other acquantances of father in law.
Well worth a visit - The Saltmans live there, they are never out of the place.
