So far in 2008, my plans to lose weight have resulted in nothing. The diet I started way back in January or February, never really took off, and then I discovered white chocolate Maltesers. Now, its as bad as ever, and I really feel like shit.

I have said before, that I hate gyms. Detest them, and I think I spent enough last year on gyms, to do me a lifetime, and I hardly even used the bloody thing.

Its time to get serious. People tell me, golf isn't really good exercise, as its very start/stop and you tend to amble round, rather than walk briskly, then wait for the group ahead to play their shots, then amble a bit more. So. I'm going to buy a pencil bag. Stick a couple of clubs in there. 6 balls, and carry two bottles of water and a packet of tees. I'm going to try, three days a week, to get up at 8am, and be at the course for 8.30 before anyone else gets out, and with a lightweight bag and a few clubs, try to get round the course as quickly as possible. I'm noteven going to bother putting out, and treat it as exercise, with a little bit of practice thrown in. Try to make it as brisk as possible, and start eating more sensibly.

So, tomorrow morning, I'll weigh in and see what the bad news is. Then its time to get serious. Do more walking, maybe try to throw in a bit of jogging to make it a bit more intensive, when I feel that I can. Don't want to do too much at first. I'm going to stop eating bread. I eat way too much. And I have to kick crap food and crap fizzy drinks into touch. My first goal is to get down to my lowest weight of 2007, then try to go a bit further this time.

Its means I could be off the course very early, go home and have a shower, and still be able to get to the course for a few more holes, played properly, or a bit of practice.

It kinda sunk in today, when I heard of a guy who works upstairs in our building. This guy is BIG. You oughta hear him wheeze when he gets up a flight of stairs. Well, he had a heartattack today, and I just feel, that if I continue the same way, thats going to be my fate as well. And I don't want that.

So I'll report back tomorrow and will take it from there.

Speed golf as you refer to it Col is something quite a few rugby teams at the top level in england do. I know Sale, Wasps Leicester and Gloucester all do it as something different. Some of their best time for 18 holes are 38mins if i remember rightly. But they only use one club and ball for all 18 holes and no putts.

Sounds like a plan Daniel. Don't think I'd do it in 38 minutes though.

A mate of mine went out with 3 clubs recently to play a few holes at our course, and was pulled up by some tw*t with his head up his ar$e, for practicing on the course. When he asked what the guy meant, he was told that he should be carrying a bag, otherwise its practicing. I'd have told him to wind his feckin neck in. Hence the reason for a pencil bag and a few clubs. At least that way, I won't be hauled up in front of the committee. I suppose a way of seeing how I was getting on, would be to chart how long it takes me to get round the course each time I do it.

Good luck Col,

Certainly walking round the course briskly will help you loose weight, get fitter and you'll feel better within yourself and hopefully your handicap will come down as well ... benefits all round I'd say;)

Well, funny you should say that. When I think back when I was playing well towards the end of last season, I was around a stone lighter, and since then my belly has been getting larger again and my scores have reverted back to where they were before the weight loss last year. I've looked at recent videos of my swing compared to last year when I was at my lightest weight, and I look totally different, in general, at setup and during the swing. Maybe I've learned to swing like a fat ba$tard again.

Hopefully this will help again.

As an aside. If I do manage to do well during the diet, it also means more money for more clubs. :D Like I need an excuse.

Best way to diet is to not follow any specific diet. You are going to put everything back.

What you need is a change of lifestyle. Don't deny yourself anything that you fancy. You can have your chocolates and your ice cream but in smaller quantities. If you can buy a treadmill and do 30-40 minutes of brisk walking 4-5 times a week you don't need anything else.

Have a hearty breakfast and a good lunch. Very light dinner, a toast, an egg some cheese or some fruit. Don't eat anything at least 3 hours before you go to sleep.
Good luck

right mate,
heres my advice as a former boxer, i have been seriously fit although im a plump bassa now the knowledge isnt lost on me.

forget speed golf or whatever you want to call it, waste of time and energy imo, you'l play quick rushed shots and still be stopping and starting, no real benefit to either.

training in the morning is the best time to train as your body hasnt consumed any carbs for on average 8 hours before yout rain, meaning your body will start to burn fat almost straight away, buy a skip rope, cheap as chips maybe 6 quid or so, 7 sets of 2 mins with a minute in between each set, try it for a month see how you get on, 21 mins in total every second day, dont overdo it rest is as important as training.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT!! the saying "you are what you eat" IS true, dont eat anythign for an hour after yout rain as your body will still burn fat for up to 60 mins after you stop.

Breakfast like a King
lunch like a prince
and dinner like a pauper

and drink loads of water,

Berst of luck!!

As long as no-one puts up CCTV to get footage of me skipping, that would be a great idea. lol. Anything else you could suggest, other than skipping? I'd probably do myself an injury trying that, especially as both my knees are fecked from rugby. :(

well mate i dont weant to tell you to do anything that goin to make you injure yourself

i dunno how bad your knees are, but running is the king of all exercises, closely followed by skipping, if you cant skip it kinda rules out running, and beleive it or not dancing is also pretty high up on the list, yip all the jokes can be directed here but you would be shocked at how many professional sportsmen dance, im guessing you dont fancy the dancing much though-lol

could try swimming mate, alot of people coming back from injuries start with this, its very good for you and not at all strenuous, 20 - 40 lengths, but no longer than 20 mins in the pool, what ever comes first

I think first things first. You need to walk before you can run, so maybe I'll start with a 2-3 mile walk as soon as I get up for starters. Try to get my time down over the space of a couple of weeks, then perhaps try jogging for part of it, then gradually increase that, until I an run most/all of it, and see what happens. If I do that when I wake up, then I can still get up and play golf. Alternatively, I suppose I could join the gym, and just use the likes of the cardio stuff, get there real early before the place fills up, then go play golf. Swimming for me ain't good, I could do a length probably, but not much more. I suppose as well, my kness haven't been as bad since I took up the golf, so maybe I could work them a bit more than I used to. Will get something planned up.

Just realised I also forgot to weigh in this morning, so will do that first thing tomorrow.

Sorry Col - you ain't going to like this...............

Weight control is a pretty simple thing. You have to eat less.

That's it.

Nowadays there is so much fast food and prepackaged food available, it's so easy to grab something that is quick. Unfortunately it's mostly processed and that's bad.

I once read that if we never ate ANYTHING that comes out of a packet then we'd be super healthy and slim.

I really wish you luck but a diet is only short term, you'll need to change your lifestyle for good.

Have you ever tried Weightwatchers? There are very very few people that WW doesn't work for.

As for exercise. All and any movement is good. Every little bit helps.

YOU CAN DO THIS.

Do it for yourself.

Try going over to the MensHealth forums (www.menshealth.co.uk) and have a read of the threads in there. Some very good advice on how to lose fat and get fit. A small investment in some weights (about 20kg to start) a decent full body routine 3 times a week with a good diet with 6 smaller meals a day to keep energy levels more constant rather than peaking and troughing will see you right.

...thus far Col....this is IMO, the BEST piece of advice in any of the responses thus far.....seriously, eat food from the base ingredients up.....dont buy / eat anything pre-prepared ...until, at least , your happy that your weight loss is progressing well and is under some kind of control......and avoid pastries and excess sugars......so have plenty steak but avoid steak pies....! Eat fish but avoid for example Birds Eye Cod Fillet ....you get the drift ??
If you look at weight loss programmes from the likes of Slimming Specialists like Weightwatchers......their approach is almost on the lines of what I have just described....processed foods are best left alone...if you like a curry, make it yourself with the base ingredients ....it can be done healthily....but dont get a Tikka Massala ready meal...its off the fat-ometer scale !
best of luck Buddy.....

Well, the first part is now over. Got on the scales this morning to weigh in, and came out at 19st 12lbs, so I was quite happy with that. I was so sure I was going to be over the 20st mark again, so it gives me something to work on now. Monday starts the big push again.

Had a doctors appointment Wednesday morning. Some of you may know I've had blood pressure problems recently, its been way too high for someone of my age. Well, the doctor put it all down to hypertension, but also mainly my weight. So I go now once a month for a BP check and weigh in, and if theres no change or its worse, I get a bollockin.

There was a slight change in my BP last month, it was slightly higher, and I thought this month would be just as bad, so I was going to cancel the appointment, but I decided I'd go, but play it very differently. Usually I'd rush there with seconds to spare before my appointment, and only have my tablets in me half an hour before getting my BP checked. So this time, I got up at 7.30, took my meds, went out for a walk, took a shower, left half an hour before my appointment, arrived 15 minutes early, checked in, sat in the waiting room and read a golf mag till I was called. The result? My BP was normal. Ok, so it was the high end of normal, but normal nonetheless. Down from 169/110 last month to 147/84 this month. Big difference. Also 6lbs off my weight since my last appointment, so everyone was well chuffed, myself included.

Thats given me a bit of a boost again to continue the good work I've done and stick at it, but probably the biggest kick in the ass I got was today. I noticed in the pro shop, there is new club t-shirts, so I thought I'd buy a couple. Biggest size he has was XL, but a fairly big fitting XL, so I went into the locker room to try one on. An XXL would be perfect. So he said he'd try to order me a couple up, but just my bloody luck, thats the biggest they feckin do. Plus, all the clothes he stocks are all far too small for my ample frame, and I'm getting pissed off seeing clothes I'd love to buy and KNOW they'd look like feck all on me or not fit at all. So, more walking will be done, more exercising generally, more stretching, and I need to get this feckin belly off me else I'll feckin scream. It might have pissed me off, but I'm going to use that negative feeling and turn it around into positive thoughts.

Golf at the moment, although I intend to start walking a good bit more also. Skipping wouldn't be a good idea for me. My knees just wouldn't be able to put up with it tbh. Doc said golf would be ok for now, as long as I try and keep up a brisk pace between shots, but there is gonna come a time where I'm going to have to up the exercise and either run, swim or go to the gym. I tend to go to the course early now, and if I'm getting held up, I skip holes as its quite easy to do around our course.

Also when we go to Mickee D's for a Big one supersized with a diet coke after a hard day's work on the course you can have a musi bar without chocolate. Also you will not be able to drink all that free drink Carlsberg will dish out over the week to many calories in booze..OR you can be like me and think slim...its a lot easier than anything else...... :twitcy:
