Its about time i knew what my proper handicap was.

As i am not a member of a club i dont have an official handicap. I play with a society that plays a different course every week, so getting 3 cards from the same course would mean there being gaps of several months between each one. ive got 3 cards from rounds ive played in the last month but theyre from different courses, all off the yellows. Can any of you guys work your magic on these, i dont think ive left any required details off, anyway here are my last 3 rounds.....

1st card= Brabazon,Belfry
Par=72
score=106 nothing deducted,this is just how many shots i took
SSS=71

Im now off out and dont have time to do it for you.But basically take any big scores for a single hole down to a double bogey (Ie; Bring a 7 or 8 down to a 6 on a Par 4).Then add your three round totals up and divide by 3 to get an average gross score.

Do the same for the course pars to get an average.

The differential - (rounded up over .5 exact) is your "handicap".

I'll second that - my h'cap lapsed a few years ago, but I've used Golfshake to record my scores since so that I can play in work and society outings and feel "honest" about my h'cap.

If you were joining a new course they'd ask you to submit 3 cards. They'd then round down the scores so that anything worse than a double bogey becomes a double bogey. They'd then compare your adjusted scores to the SSS of the course (or CSS if it was a competition round). Whichever card with the lowest difference between adjusted score and SSS/ CSS would be used to calculate your starting HC (with the other cards being ignored). Your starting HC would then be calculated simply by doing:

Adjusted scores - SSS (or CSS) = Starting HC

So for your cards above the card from HH would be used. The adjusted score would be 90 (1 triple rounded down to a double) and so your HC would be:

90 - 68 = 22

Your starting HC is meant to show your potential ability, not your average, so this figure may seem a little low and you may struggle to play to it, especially if the round at HH was your best ever round by a long way.

What would I personally put you off? Well given that you only play 'friendly' society golf, and assuming that the round at HH wasn't your average golf, I'd say around 24 as a starting point.

I see you three putted on the last at the Belfry then ;)

I would agree with the above though that 24 is a fair starting point

25.3

Are the SSS for the Yellow Tees or the course?

How I worked it out.
Drop all scores over +2 on each hole to +2 and add up your scores =

1. 95, 2. 90, & 3. 99 = 24, 22 & 30 (76) above SSS

Divide 76 by 3 = 25.33333333333, rounded to 25.3 or 25 playing.

thanks for the help guys, i didnt have a clue how to work it out. the society gave me a 24 which is now down to 22, as a win gets you cut by 1, and a win with over 40pts gets you an extra shot off,and i won recently with 43pts.

no bud it was a 2 putt, i was just off the green to the left by the bunker with my second, almost chipped in, then sadly missed the relatively short putt.

A lot of societies state the maximium of 24 handicap and it good starting point. As you have been docked to 22, thats your "offical" handicap at least for the society and would use it for any other golf comps

Although lucky not to be docked more for 43 points, that -7 under your handicap.
